The Albanian Riviera is the southern stretch of Albania's Ionian coast, running from Vlorë in the north to Sarandë and Ksamil in the south. Turquoise water, white pebble beaches, olive-and-citrus terraced hills, and prices that beat Croatia's coast by 50% — it's the rising star of Mediterranean beach holidays for Balkan travellers.
From Skopje the drive is long but the destination justifies it. This guide covers the full route, the best beaches, and a practical 5-day itinerary by rental car.
Distance and Drive Time
Skopje to Sarandë (south): approximately 530 km Skopje to Vlorë (north): approximately 470 km Drive time: 7–8 hours including border + mountain roads Border: 1 (Macedonia–Albania at Qafë Thanë / Tushemisht)
The route is direct — straight south through Tirana, then west to the coast at Vlorë, then south along the Riviera coastal road. The final 100 km from Vlorë to Sarandë is the famous Llogara Pass road — one of the most scenic drives in Europe.
The Route
Option A: Skopje → Tirana → Vlorë → Riviera (recommended)
- Skopje → Struga → Tushemisht border — 175 km on M-4 (~2.5 hours). Border at Qafë Thanë.
- Border → Elbasan → Tirana bypass — 80 km on Albanian motorway (~1 hour 15 min)
- Tirana → Fier → Vlorë — 150 km (~2 hours). New motorway makes this fast.
- Vlorë → Llogara Pass → Himarë → Sarandë — 130 km coastal road (~3 hours, slow due to scenic stops)
The Llogara Pass climbs to 1,025 m with sweeping Ionian views. Drive carefully — narrow turns, no guardrails on some sections.
Option B: Skopje → Ohrid → Albania → Tirana (longer, more scenic)
Adds 1 hour but passes Lake Ohrid and the Macedonian–Albanian lake border.
Insurance and Documents
Albania requires Green Card Zone 2 insurance — €70 per rental. Same supplement covers Bosnia, Montenegro, and Croatia.
At the border:
- Passport
- Driving licence
- Vehicle registration
- Green Card certificate (Zone 2)
- Authorization letter from Relax Rent a Car
For full procedure see cross-border driving from North Macedonia and Skopje to Tirana driving guide.
Driving in Albania: Roads have improved dramatically since 2020 but secondary roads remain rough. Stick to motorways and primary roads. Local driving style is aggressive — give space.
The Best Beaches
Ksamil
The most famous Albanian beach. Four small islands accessible by paddle boat from white pebble bays. Crystal-clear turquoise water that rivals the Maldives. Heavily developed, busy in August, but the beaches are still gorgeous before 10 AM and after 5 PM.
Best for: postcard photos, families, easy swimming. Park in town (€2/day) and walk to beaches.
Sarandë town beach
The town's main beach is mediocre but the harbour-side promenade is excellent for evening strolls. Better beaches 5–10 km north and south.
Mirror Beach (Ksamil)
A small cove between Sarandë and Ksamil. Free entry, less crowded.
Borsh
Long pebble beach south of Himarë. Quieter, more local than Ksamil. Excellent for families wanting space.
Gjipe Beach
A hidden beach reached by a 30-minute hike from the road. Most pristine on the Riviera — no commercial development, BYO food and water.
Dhërmi
Trendy beach town between Vlorë and Sarandë. Beach clubs, bars, music. The party half of the Riviera.
Himarë
Mid-Riviera town with multiple coves. Best balance of facilities and quiet beaches. Old town up the hill is worth a wander.
Plazhi i Pasqyrave (Mirror Beach)
Just outside Vlorë. Easy, family-friendly.

July: peak heat (35°C+), busy
August: chaos — full beaches, full restaurants, doubled prices, full traffic on Llogara Pass. Avoid weekends.
May: pleasant for sightseeing but the sea is still cool (20°C). Some places not yet open.
October–April: quiet but limited services. Many beach restaurants closed.
Practical Notes
Currency: Albania uses the lek (ALL), ~100 ALL = €1. Euros widely accepted at tourist-area restaurants and beach clubs. Cash dominates outside main hotels.
Mobile data: Albanian SIM (Vodafone, ALBtelecom) for €10/week. Macedonian SIM EU roaming may not include Albania.
Speed cameras: Albanian motorways are camera-monitored. Stick to 110 km/h limit.
Border timing: Tushemisht crossing rarely queues. Add 10–15 min at peak weekends.
Combining with Greek islands: Sarandë harbour has 30-min ferries to Corfu — perfect for an extra island day. €25 round trip, no Schengen visa needed for EU/UK/US/CA/AU.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the drive from Skopje to the Albanian Riviera? Approximately 7–8 hours one way: ~4 hours to Tirana, then 2.5–3 hours along the coastal road to Sarandë. Most travellers split the drive — overnight in Tirana on Day 1, complete the Riviera leg on Day 2 morning.
Is the Llogara Pass road safe? Yes when driven cautiously. The road is paved, well-maintained, but narrow with steep drops. Avoid driving it at night or in heavy rain. Reduce speed by 30% from posted limits. The 1,025-m pass occasionally has snow chains required in winter (rare November–March events).
Do I need Green Card Zone 2 insurance for Albania? Yes. Albania requires Zone 2 (€70 per rental) which also covers Bosnia, Montenegro, and Croatia. We add it automatically when Albania is on your authorization letter.
Which is better: Ksamil or Himarë? Ksamil for postcard beaches and crystal-clear water with islands. Himarë for a more local, quieter atmosphere with multiple beach options nearby. Many travellers split: 2 nights in Himarë, 2 nights in Ksamil.
Can I take a day trip from Sarandë to Corfu? Yes. Ferry runs daily May–October, 30 min each way, €25 round trip. No Schengen visa needed for EU/UK/US/CA/AU passports — Greek customs at Corfu port. Bring passport, not driving licence — you can't take the rental car on the ferry without a separate Greek-island authorization.
