North Macedonia's central Balkan location makes it an ideal base for multi-country road trips. With proper documentation, you can drive to five neighbouring countries and beyond. Here is everything you need to know about cross-border travel with a rental car.
Green Card Insurance: What You Need
A Green Card (officially the International Motor Insurance Card) is mandatory for driving a foreign-registered vehicle across borders. It proves you have valid third-party liability insurance in the destination country.
Zone 1 — €50 (One-Time Fee)
Covers border crossings to:
- Kosovo (Prishtina, Prizren)
- Albania (Tirana, Durrës)
- Serbia (Belgrade, Niš)
- Greece (Thessaloniki, Athens)
- Bulgaria (Sofia, Bansko)
Zone 2 — €70 (One-Time Fee)
Covers Zone 1 countries plus:
- Bosnia & Herzegovina (Sarajevo, Mostar)
- Montenegro (Podgorica, Budva)
- Croatia (Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb)
How to Get a Green Card
At Relax Rent a Car, Green Card insurance is available as an optional extra during booking. We arrange the document before your pickup — no paperwork required at the border.
Important: You must notify us at least 24 hours before your trip if you plan to cross a border. Not all rental vehicles are authorised for cross-border travel.

- Car rental agreement (original, not a copy)
- Green Card insurance document
- Vehicle registration certificate (provided with the car)
Border Crossing Tips
- Avoid Friday/Sunday afternoons — heaviest traffic at Greek and Kosovo borders
- Have cash ready — some border crossings have small fees (parking, road tax)
- Keep documents accessible — don't bury them in luggage
- Check opening hours — smaller crossings close at night
- Phone coverage — buy a local SIM or ensure roaming is active

What to Do If You Break Down Abroad
A breakdown in a neighbouring country while driving a rental car requires a specific process:
- Call Relax Rent a Car immediately at +389 71 392 488 — we operate 24/7 and coordinate roadside assistance across the region
- Do not arrange local repairs independently — all repair authorisations must come from us to avoid issues with insurance and liability
- Stay with the vehicle and use the warning triangle from the boot (required in Macedonia and all neighbouring countries)
- Document everything — photos of the vehicle position, damage, and odometer reading
- Police report: If the breakdown is caused by an accident, obtain a police report before the vehicle is moved. This is required for all insurance claims.
Our roadside assistance network covers Greece, Kosovo, Serbia, and Bulgaria. For Albania, assistance is coordinated through our Albanian partner — response time may be longer (2–4 hours in remote areas). This is why we recommend carrying the emergency number before crossing into Albania.
Returning the Car After a Border Trip
You must return the rental car to the agreed location in North Macedonia. One-way international drops are not available. Make sure your Green Card covers the entire duration of your cross-border stay.
If you experience any issues at a border crossing, call our 24/7 support at +389 71 392 488.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to notify you before every border crossing? Yes — at least 24 hours in advance. Not all vehicles in our fleet are authorised for international travel. Notification lets us prepare your Green Card documentation and verify your specific vehicle's cross-border clearance.
Can I cross into Kosovo without a Green Card? Technically Kosovo is not covered by the standard EU Green Card system, but as a practical matter we issue the same documentation for Kosovo as other Zone 1 countries. Do not cross any border without our written cross-border permit regardless.
What if I want to drive through multiple countries? Zone 2 Green Card (€70) covers the widest range: Kosovo, Albania, Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Croatia. If you are doing a Balkan loop, Zone 2 is the right choice.
Can I return the car in another country? No. All vehicles must be returned to North Macedonia. One-way international drops are not available.
Is my credit card's rental car insurance valid for cross-border trips? Credit card rental insurance typically covers collision damage but does not replace the Green Card third-party liability requirement. Both are needed for legal cross-border travel.
