Skopje Airport (SKP) is the main entry point for visitors to North Macedonia. Renting a car here — rather than relying on taxis or airport shuttles — is the single decision that determines how much of the country you actually get to see. This guide covers every practical aspect of car rental at SKP: who operates there, what to pay, how to book, and what happens when your flight lands.
Skopje Airport (SKP) — Basic Facts
Official name: Skopje International Airport "Alexander the Great" IATA code: SKP Location: 22 km southeast of Skopje city centre Distance to Ohrid: 170 km (2.5–3 hours drive) Airlines: Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Pegasus, flydubai, and others
The airport has a single terminal — compact, modern, easy to navigate. The arrivals hall is on the ground floor. You will be through passport control and baggage claim within 20–40 minutes of landing under normal conditions.
Car Rental Operators at SKP
International Chains (Counter Presence)
Several global brands have franchise counters at Skopje Airport or in the city, bookable through platforms like Rentalcars.com or Europcar.com:
- Sixt — counter at airport
- Europcar — franchise arrangement, primarily city-based
- Budget — partnership desk
- Avis — partnership arrangement
What to expect from international chains: Standardised booking process, global loyalty programmes, newer average fleet. Hidden fees are common: young driver surcharges (€10–15/day), mileage caps (100–300 km/day with charges above), GPS rental (€8–12/day), mandatory excess waiver add-ons. Deposit holds of €300–500 are standard. For a detailed comparison, see our local vs international chains guide.
Local Operators (Meet-and-Greet)
Local car rental companies operate on a meet-and-greet basis — they meet you in the arrivals hall rather than maintaining an expensive airport counter, which keeps costs lower.
Relax Rent a Car has operated at SKP since 2001. Our driver holds your name sign in the arrivals hall. You inspect the vehicle together in the designated parking area, sign the rental agreement, and drive away — typically within 10–15 minutes of meeting.
Price difference: Local operators typically undercut international chain rates by 25–40% on comparable vehicles, with no mileage caps, lower extra fees, and no deposit for online bookings.

Which Car to Rent at SKP
For City + Ohrid (Most Common Itinerary)
Hyundai i10 Automatic (€55/day) — ideal for 1–2 people, easy to park in Ohrid's narrow streets and Skopje's centre, excellent fuel economy. The automatic gearbox makes mountain sections (Kičevo–Ohrid) less tiring.
Opel Corsa or Peugeot 301 Automatic (€65/day) — slightly more space and boot room for longer stays. Good choice for 2 people with checked luggage.
For Families and Groups
Peugeot Rifter 7 Seats (€85/day) — sliding rear door, genuinely flat floor, maximum luggage capacity. The go-to choice for families with children. Book early for summer — 7-seat vehicles sell out quickly in July/August.
Dacia Jogger 7 Seats (€70/day) — manual gearbox, lower price. Good for groups comfortable with manual transmission and travelling with more luggage than passengers.
For Mountain Driving and Off-Season
Dacia Duster 4x4 Diesel (€100/day) — 4-wheel drive, high ground clearance, excellent for Mavrovo, Galičica, and winter ski resort access. Mandatory for challenging mountain roads in autumn/winter.
Booking: How to Get the Best Price
Book direct, not through aggregators. Platforms like Rentalcars.com, Expedia, or Kayak charge a 12–20% commission built into the displayed rate. Booking directly through our website gives you the same 10% online discount without paying platform fees.
Book early for summer. From mid-June onwards, 7-seat vehicles and economy automatics book out weeks in advance. For July and August arrivals at SKP, book 3–4 weeks ahead. For shoulder season (May–June, September), 1–2 weeks is sufficient.
Choose the weekly rate if staying 7+ days. For any stay of 7 or more days, a weekly package saves significantly over daily rates. A 7-day economy rental at €55/day costs €385; the weekly package for the same vehicle is €280 — a saving of €105.
Read the insurance terms before confirming. Every rental includes third-party liability insurance (mandatory). CDW (collision damage waiver) with €200 excess costs €7/day — reducing your liability to €200 in the event of damage. Full insurance (zero excess) costs €15/day and eliminates all financial exposure. See our insurance guide for the full comparison.
What Documents You Need at Pickup
Bring these to the arrivals hall:
- Valid driving licence (EU/UK licences accepted without IDP; non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence)
- Passport (for identity verification in the rental agreement)
- Booking confirmation (email or printout)
- Payment card (for any extras purchased at pickup, or if a deposit hold is required)
For cross-border travel: Inform us at booking if your trip includes neighbouring countries. Green Card documentation (cross-border insurance) requires advance preparation. See our cross-border driving guide.
The Pickup Process at SKP
- Land, pass passport control, collect luggage — standard arrivals flow. Single terminal, straightforward.
- Exit to arrivals hall — our driver waits with your name sign near the main exit from baggage claim.
- Walk to designated vehicle area (3–5 minutes from arrivals)
- Joint inspection — we walk around the vehicle together noting any pre-existing marks. You receive a condition report.
- Sign rental agreement — review key terms (fuel policy, return time, mileage — should read "unlimited")
- Drive away — total time from meeting to departure: 10–15 minutes
Full details on the physical layout and exact meeting point are in our Skopje Airport pickup guide.
From SKP: Where to Drive First
Most visitors have one of two immediate destinations after collecting their car at SKP:
→ Skopje city centre (20 km, 25 minutes) Take the A1 northwest from the airport. Follow signs for "Skopje Centar". The road is fast and clearly signed. No tolls.
→ Ohrid (170 km, 2.5–3 hours) Take the A1 southwest to the Veles junction, then the A2 west toward Tetovo and Gostivar, continuing to Kičevo and the lake descent. The full route is covered in our Skopje to Ohrid drive guide.
→ Cross-border (same day) Skopje to Pristina (Kosovo): 90 km, 1.5 hours. Skopje to Thessaloniki (Greece): 250 km, 3 hours. Both routes are on good roads. Cross-border permission required — book in advance.
Seasonal Notes for SKP Rentals
Summer (June–August): Peak season at SKP. Holiday charter flights from Germany, Switzerland, and the UK bring large volumes of summer visitors. Book early — especially 7-seat vans and economy automatics.
Spring/Autumn (April–May, September–October): Best conditions. Good availability, pleasant driving weather, lower daily rates. Mavrovo and Galičica are at their most scenic.
Winter (December–February): Lowest prices. All vehicles fitted with winter tyres from 15 November. Ski resort traffic (Popova Šapka, Mavrovo) means the Duster 4x4 books quickly from December onwards — book a week ahead.
Fuel on the SKP Route
Fill up before leaving the airport area if you plan to drive directly to Ohrid. The Makpetrol station on the airport road (2 km before the terminal) is convenient for this. The full station guide including prices and locations is in our petrol stations guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a car rental desk at Skopje Airport terminal? International chain franchises have counters inside or adjacent to the terminal. Local companies like Relax Rent a Car operate on a meet-and-greet basis — our driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. This arrangement keeps our costs (and your rental price) lower.
How long does car rental pickup take at SKP? From meeting our driver to driving away: typically 10–15 minutes. The inspection, paperwork, and handover are straightforward. Allow 30–40 minutes total from landing to being on the road (including passport control, baggage, and walking to the car).
Can I book a car at the airport on arrival without a reservation? Walk-in bookings are sometimes possible for local operators if vehicles are available, but availability is not guaranteed. In summer especially, advance booking is essential. We recommend booking at least 1–2 weeks ahead for any visit.
What happens if my flight is delayed? We monitor flight arrivals in real time. If your SKP arrival is delayed — whether by one hour or five — we adjust pickup timing automatically and wait at no extra charge. This is standard practice for us and a significant advantage over international chain counters with fixed opening hours.
Do you offer infant/child car seats at SKP? Yes — child seats (suitable for ages approximately 1–4, up to 18 kg) are available at €2/day, bookable when reserving. Bring your own if you have a specific age group requirement (infant bucket seat, booster seat for older children).
Browse our fleet and book online — 10% discount applied automatically, no deposit required, pay on arrival.
