Most travelers planning a 2026 trip to North Macedonia can enter without a visa. The country grants visa-free access to citizens of the European Union, Schengen Area, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other nationalities for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Holders of a valid Schengen visa, US visa, or UK residence permit can also enter visa-free even if their nationality would normally require one.
This guide covers who needs a visa, what documents to bring, and how to clear border control smoothly — including the tweaks that matter when you're picking up a rental car at Skopje Airport.

Passport Requirements
Your passport must be:
- Valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from North Macedonia
- Have at least 2 blank pages for entry/exit stamps
- Not damaged or altered
EU citizens may also enter with a national ID card instead of a passport — useful if you're crossing back into Schengen at the same time.
What Border Officers Actually Check
Land and air entries are usually quick (under 2 minutes per passenger). Officers may ask:
- Purpose of visit ("tourism" is fine — no need to elaborate)
- Duration of stay
- Where you're staying (hotel name or address suffices)
- Onward ticket (rare; have it in your phone just in case)
Cash flashing or banking statements are not normally requested. Border crossings into North Macedonia from Greece (Bogorodica), Bulgaria (Deve Bair), Serbia (Tabanovce), Kosovo (Blace), and Albania (Qafë Thanë) all use the same visa rules.
Driving in North Macedonia: Documents Beyond the Visa
Once your passport gets stamped, the documents that matter for the road are:
- Driving licence: EU and Latin-script licences (US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.) are accepted as-is. Drivers from countries that issue licences in non-Latin scripts (Cyrillic, Arabic, Mandarin, Hindi, etc.) need an International Driving Permit (IDP) carried alongside their national licence.
- Passport (or national ID for EU citizens) — required at every car rental pickup as the second ID.
- Credit/debit card in the main driver's name — not strictly mandatory at our office (we accept cash deposits in EUR or MKD), but most international agencies require it.
- Minimum age: 18 with at least 1 year of driving experience. Some companies require 21 or 23; we don't.
For a deeper look at the licence and document side, see our driving licence requirements guide.
Cross-Border Trips with the Rental Car
If you plan to drive into Greece, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Albania, or Serbia, you need a Green Card insurance extension on top of the rental:
- Zone 1 (Greece, Kosovo, Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia): €50 per rental
- Zone 2 (Zone 1 + Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina): €70 per rental
Tell the rental office at booking. We arrange the Green Card and the cross-border permit before you collect the car.
Practical reminder: North Macedonia is not in the Schengen Area or the EU. Each border crossing is a real check — bring your passport even on EU side trips, and budget 15–60 minutes for the queue depending on the season and crossing point.
Common Visa Questions
Can I extend my 90-day stay? Yes, by applying at a Macedonian Police station before day 90. Tourists rarely need this.
Will my passport be stamped? Yes — both on entry and exit. The stamp is important if you later cross into Serbia, because Serbia does not recognize Kosovo as an entry point. If you enter via Kosovo without a Macedonian or Albanian stamp, Serbian officers may refuse onward entry.
Do children need their own passports? Yes — every traveler regardless of age needs their own valid passport.
What if my passport expires within 3 months of my trip ending? Renew before traveling. Border officers may refuse entry on a near-expiry passport.
Can I work or study on a visa-free entry? No. Visa-free entry covers tourism and short business meetings only. Work and study require separate residence permits.
