Mavrovo National Park is the largest of North Macedonia's three national parks (731 km²), and the most varied: alpine ski resort in winter, hiking and lake holidays in summer, frescoed monasteries year-round. It sits in the country's far west, 2 hours from Skopje by car, and rewards visitors with mountain peaks above 2,700m, the iconic mavrovo-guide">Bigorski Monastery, the half-submerged church on Lake Mavrovo, and the village of Galičnik where Macedonia's most famous traditional wedding happens every July.
This guide covers everything: ski resort details, hiking trail recommendations, the cultural sights, where to eat and stay, plus the practical drive from Skopje.

Getting There: The Drive from Skopje
Take the A2 highway west from Skopje toward Tetovo, then A2/E65 continuing to Gostivar. After Gostivar, follow signs for "Mavrovo" — the road climbs through pine forests for 20 km before you reach the lake basin.
- Skopje → Gostivar: 75 km, 50 minutes (highway)
- Gostivar → Mavrovo Lake: 50 km, 50 minutes (mountain road, scenic)
- Total: ~130 km, 1h 50min
The mountain road has tight curves and slower trucks; allow extra time on weekends. Last fuel station is at Gostivar — fill up there.
What to See
Lake Mavrovo
The artificial lake sits at 1,200m and is the visual centerpiece of the park. Its most famous feature: Sveta Bogorodica Church, a 17th-century chapel partially submerged when the lake was created in 1953. The bell tower juts above the water, and depending on water levels you can sometimes walk out to it on a footbridge.
Lake activities:
- Walking the shore: 4 km flat path with viewpoints
- Cycling: e-bike rentals at Hotel Bistra (€8/hour)
- Boat hire: small kayaks and pedalboats from May–September (€5–10/hour)
- Fishing: requires permit from the park office
Bigorski Monastery (Sv. Jovan Bigorski)
20 km west of the lake along the Radika River, Bigorski Monastery is one of the most important Orthodox monasteries in the Balkans. Founded 1020, rebuilt several times, current structure from the 18th century. Highlights:
- Hand-carved iconostasis — 4 years of carving, considered a masterwork of the Mijak woodcarving school
- Active monastic community — 18 monks live and work here
- Free entry, guided tours in English by request
- Restaurant at the monastery serves trout from the Radika and homemade rakija (€10–15)
Photography is allowed in the courtyard but not inside the church. Dress modestly — long trousers/skirts, covered shoulders.
Galičnik Village
A traditional Mijak village preserved as a cultural heritage site. Stone houses, cobblestone lanes, dramatic mountain backdrop. Most famous for the Galičnik Wedding Festival (second weekend of July) — a recreated traditional wedding that draws thousands of spectators. Weddings happen at noon Saturday with traditional music, costumes, and folk dancing.
Outside July, the village is sleepy and beautiful. Allow 90 minutes to walk it. Try kachkaval cheese from the village dairy.
Mount Korab
At 2,764m, Macedonia's highest peak (and Albania's, since the summit straddles the border). Standard ascent route is from Strazimir saddle:
- 1,400m elevation gain
- 7-8 hours round-trip
- Marked trail, but carry a map — high-elevation weather changes fast
- Guided ascent strongly recommended for non-experienced hikers (~€80–120 per person)
Skiing in Mavrovo
Mavrovo Ski Resort runs December–March (snow permitting). Compared to Popova Šapka above Tetovo, Mavrovo has:
- Larger area: 13 lifts vs. 6
- More varied terrain: 30 km of marked pistes
- Higher base: 1,900m, 2,255m top
- Longer season: typically opens late November, closes early April
Lift pass: €25/day adult, €15 child. Ski rental at the base: €15/day skis + boots, €10/day snowboard.
Best ski hotels: Hotel Bistra (4-star, ski-in ski-out, €100–140), Hotel Slavonija (3-star, €60–80).
Hiking Trails (Summer)
| Trail | Difficulty | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Mavrovo loop | Easy | 90 min | Flat shore path |
| Bistra Plateau | Moderate | 4 hours | Wildflowers, panoramic views |
| Korab summit | Hard | 7-8 hours | Macedonia's highest, guide recommended |
| Galičnik to Janče | Moderate | 5 hours | Through traditional villages |
| Sar-Korab traverse | Expert | 2-3 days | Multi-day, hut-based |
Best hiking months: late May (snow finally gone, wildflowers) and September-October (clear visibility, fewer crowds). July can be hot at lower elevations; high routes stay pleasant.
Where to Stay
In the village (Mavrovo):
- Hotel Bistra ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — best in the park, restaurant, spa, pool. €100–140
- Hotel Mavrovski ⭐⭐⭐ — classic ski hotel, family-friendly. €60–80
- Hotel Tutto ⭐⭐⭐ — budget option, clean, central. €40–60
In Galičnik village: family-run guesthouses, €25–45 per night, traditional breakfasts. Book 2 weeks ahead in summer; 6 months ahead for the wedding festival weekend.
In Debar: a small spa town 25 km southwest with thermal pools — alternative base for monastery-focused trips.
Where to Eat
- Hotel Bistra restaurant: large menu, lake views, €15–25 per person
- Restaurant Sv. Jovan Bigorski (monastery): trout, lamb, monastery wine, €10–15
- Konoba Smokva (Galičnik): traditional Mijak food, hand-rolled pita, €8–12
- Restaurant Jance (Janče village): roadside grill, fast and filling, €6–10
Day Trip vs. Overnight
Day trip from Skopje: doable but tight. 4 hours total driving leaves only ~6 hours in the park. Best for: lake walk + monastery + lunch, or skiing + lunch in winter. Skip Galičnik and Korab.
1 night: ideal for most visitors. Day 1: drive + lake + monastery + dinner. Day 2: hike or ski + Galičnik + drive back.
2+ nights: needed if Korab summit or multi-day hike is on the list. Also worth it for ski trips — multi-day passes are cheaper.
Practical Tips
- Mobile signal drops out in the deep valleys. Pre-download offline maps.
- Cash: Galičnik has no ATM. Bring cash for the village.
- Park entry: free, no fee or pass.
- Weather: 10–15°C cooler than Skopje. Pack a fleece even in July.
- Wildlife: brown bear and lynx are present but rarely seen. Keep food sealed if camping.
Renting the Right Vehicle
For the drive in summer, any economy car works (Skopje → Mavrovo is fully paved). For winter visits between November 15 and March 15, all our rentals come with winter tires fitted by law, so no extra prep needed. For deep ski-week stays, the Dacia Duster 4x4 handles snowed-in side roads with ease.
If you want to combine Mavrovo with Tetovo + Šar Mountains in one trip, see our Tetovo and Šar Mountains day trip guide — both regions are accessible from the same A2 highway.
