North Macedonia 3-Day Itinerary: The Best Short Trip by Car (2026)

3 days in North Macedonia by rental car: Skopje, Ohrid, and Matka Canyon. Complete day-by-day route guide with driving times, stops, and tips.

North Macedonia 3-Day Itinerary: The Best Short Trip by Car (2026)

Three days is enough to see the best of North Macedonia — if you have a car. Without one, you'll spend half your trip waiting for buses or paying over the odds for taxis. With a rental car, you can cover Skopje's old city in the morning, reach Lake Ohrid by afternoon, and still have time for a mountain detour on the way back. This itinerary is designed for travellers arriving at Skopje Airport (SKP) with exactly 72 hours before their flight home.

Before You Start: Logistics

Base: Pick up your car at Skopje Airport on arrival. Most visitors to North Macedonia fly into SKP and rent from there — see our Skopje Airport car rental guide for what to expect at pickup.

Vehicle: A compact automatic is ideal for this route. The Ohrid road has mountain sections; automatic transmission makes them easier. A standard economy car handles everything on this itinerary without issue.

Driving total: Approximately 420 km over 3 days. Fuel cost at current prices: €35–45 for a small petrol car.

What to pack: Comfortable walking shoes (Ohrid's old town has steep cobblestone streets), one warmer layer for evenings by the lake, and your passport for any potential day trips across borders.

Day 1: Skopje — Old Bazaar, Kale Fortress, Matka Canyon

Morning: Skopje City Centre (3–4 hours)

Start at Skopje's Old Bazaar (Čaršija) — the largest and best-preserved Ottoman bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul. Arrive early (before 10:00) when it's quiet and the traders are setting up. Walk through the covered market lanes, cross the Stone Bridge into the new town, and loop back through Macedonia Square with its dramatic statues and fountains.

From the Old Bazaar, climb to Kale Fortress for a view over the entire city and the Vardar River valley. The climb takes 15 minutes on foot from the bazaar entrance. No entrance fee; open from sunrise.

For coffee, the cobblestone streets of the bazaar have several good traditional coffeehouses (kafana) serving Macedonian coffee — strong, served in small cups with sugar cubes on the side.

Afternoon: Matka Canyon (1 hour drive, 3–4 hours on site)

Matka Canyon is 15 km west of Skopje and ranks among the best natural sights in the country. Drive up the gorge road — the canyon walls close in to less than 100 metres wide in places, with cave monasteries carved into the rock faces above you.

At the canyon base, rent a boat (€5–10 depending on distance) to reach Vrelo Cave, which contains one of the deepest underwater caves in Europe. Boat trips run throughout the day; allow 1–1.5 hours for the standard tour.

Alternatively, walk the 3 km path along the canyon floor to the dam and back — flat, paved, and suitable for any fitness level.

Return to Skopje by 18:00. Have dinner in the Old Bazaar area — the restaurants along the river serve excellent grilled meats and the Macedonian speciality tavče gravče (baked beans in clay pot).

Drive times today: Skopje airport → city (25 min) | City → Matka (25 min) | Matka → city centre hotel (30 min)

Day 2: Skopje to Ohrid — The Mountain Road (170 km)

Morning: Drive to Ohrid (2.5–3 hours)

Leave Skopje by 09:00. The route follows the A1 motorway southwest to Veles, then the A2 west through Tetovo and Gostivar, continuing to Kičevo and the final mountain descent to Lake Ohrid. The mountain section between Kičevo and Ohrid is the most scenic part of the drive — pine forest, dramatic drops, and the first view of the lake appearing far below.

Stop at the Kičevo–Ohrid viewpoint (signed "panorama" on the descent road) — the first sighting of Lake Ohrid from above is one of the great views in the Balkans. Pull over and take 10 minutes here.

Arrive in Ohrid by midday. Park at the lower town parking area near the amphitheatre — parking inside the old town is restricted and the streets are too narrow for most rental cars anyway.

Afternoon: Ohrid Old Town (3–4 hours)

Ohrid's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Start at the Ancient Theatre (one of the best-preserved Hellenistic theatres in the Balkans, still used for performances in summer), then walk up through the old town lanes to St. John the Theologian Church (Sveti Jovan Kaneo) — the clifftop church photographed in almost every article about North Macedonia. The view from the terrace over the lake at mid-afternoon light is outstanding.

Continue up to Samuel's Fortress for the full panoramic view over the old town, lake, and Albanian mountains on the far shore.

In the late afternoon, walk back down to the lake shore for a swim (the water is clear and clean) or sit at one of the lakeside restaurants for dinner. Ohrid trout (pastrmka) is the local speciality — order it grilled, not fried.

Sleep in Ohrid. Hotels and apartments are plentiful and good value compared to Western European lake towns. See our Ohrid hotels guide for options at different price points.

Day 3: St. Naum and Return to Skopje (or Bitola Option)

Option A: St. Naum Monastery (recommended for first-timers)

Drive the 29 km south from Ohrid along the lake shore to St. Naum Monastery — the most beautiful monastery in North Macedonia, set on a wooded headland directly above a series of crystal-clear springs that feed the southern end of the lake. The springs are shallow enough to wade in; rent a rowboat (€5) to explore them from the water.

Return to Ohrid by midday, then drive back to Skopje (allow 3 hours for the return, including a fuel stop). You'll be back at Skopje airport with time to spare for an evening flight.

Option B: Bitola and Heraclea (for history enthusiasts)

Instead of St. Naum, drive south from Ohrid toward Bitola (90 km, 1.5 hours via Resen). Bitola is the second largest city in North Macedonia and one of the most elegant — wide tree-lined boulevards, Ottoman-era mosques, and the extraordinary Heraclea Lyncestis archaeological site just outside the city: a well-preserved Roman theatre and 5th-century Byzantine basilica with intact floor mosaics. Entrance €2.

From Bitola, drive north on the A3 back toward Skopje (185 km, 2.5 hours) for your return flight. See the Ohrid to Bitola day trip guide for full details on this route.

Practical Tips

Fuel: Fill up at Skopje before heading to Ohrid. There are stations in Tetovo and Gostivar on the route. In Ohrid, the Makpetrol station on the main boulevard is convenient. See our petrol stations guide for full coverage.

Parking: Skopje centre: use the paid parking at Macedonia Square or the Old Bazaar entrance (€0.50–1/hour). Ohrid old town: park at the lower town lot (€1/hour) and walk up. Matka Canyon: free parking at the canyon entrance.

Money: Macedonian Denar (MKD). Most restaurants, hotels and larger shops accept cards; small cafés and market stalls often cash only. ATMs are plentiful in both Skopje and Ohrid. Current rough conversion: €1 ≈ 62 MKD.

Best season for this itinerary: May–June and September–October. Warm and dry, roads clear, no summer crowds on the Ohrid lakefront. July and August are busy — hotels book out and parking in Ohrid becomes difficult.

Extending to 5 or 7 days: Add Mavrovo National Park between Skopje and Ohrid (overnight at Mavrovo lake), and Bitola/Heraclea as a separate full day. Our 7-day itinerary guide covers the full extended version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 3 days enough to see North Macedonia? Three days covers the highlights — Skopje, Matka Canyon, Lake Ohrid, and one national park. You won't see everything, but the core itinerary (Skopje day one, Mavrovo or Matka day two, Ohrid days two and three) gives a genuine feel for the country. A 5-day trip adds Bitola, Tikveš wine region, or a cross-border day trip.

How far is Ohrid from Skopje by car? 172 km, approximately 2 hours on the A2 motorway and E65. The road passes through Tetovo, Gostivar, and the Kičevo basin before descending to Ohrid. An early departure from Skopje allows arrival in Ohrid by mid-morning with a full day at the lake.

What is the best base for a 3-day North Macedonia trip — Skopje or Ohrid? Split the time: one night in Skopje, two nights in Ohrid. Skopje's main sights take one day; Ohrid's old town, St. Naum Monastery, boat trips, and swimming take two days minimum. Most travellers find Ohrid the more relaxing base.

Do I need a car for a North Macedonia itinerary? A car transforms the experience. Matka Canyon (15 km from Skopje), Mavrovo National Park (2 hours from Skopje), the Tikveš wine region (90 km south), and the scenic Ohrid lakeside road all require a car. Buses exist but frequency and timing are limited for a 3-day trip.

What should I eat in North Macedonia? Tavče gravče (beans baked in clay pot) is the national dish. Šopska salata (tomato, cucumber, pepper, white cheese) is the ubiquitous starter. Kebapi (grilled minced meat) from any Skopje čaršija restaurant. Vranec red wine from Tikveš. Ajvar (roasted pepper spread) on bread. Skopje's old bazaar has the highest concentration of traditional restaurants.
