Theth & Albanian Alps from Skopje: Trekking Road Trip Guide (2026)

Drive Skopje to Theth and the Albanian Alps. Border crossing, the Theth–Valbona hike, accommodation, and a 4-day high-mountain itinerary by rental car.

Theth & Albanian Alps from Skopje: Trekking Road Trip Guide (2026)

The Albanian Alps (Bjeshkët e Nemuna — the "Accursed Mountains") are the rising star of Balkan trekking. Sharp limestone peaks reaching 2,500+ metres, untouched alpine meadows, traditional stone tower-houses, and a 17-km hike between the villages of Theth and Valbona that has become one of Europe's iconic two-day walks.

From Skopje, the Albanian Alps are a serious but rewarding road trip. The drive is long — roughly 6 hours each way — but the destination justifies the effort, and the road from Skopje to Shkoder offers some of the prettiest mountain driving in the southern Balkans.

This guide covers the route, the trekking logistics, and how to handle the rental car.

Distance and Drive Time

Skopje to Theth (via Shkoder): approximately 360 km Drive time: 6 hours including border Border: 1 (Macedonia–Albania, multiple options)

Theth sits in the heart of Theth National Park, accessed by a single mountain road that climbs from Boge over the Theth Pass at 1,650 m. The road has been fully paved since 2022, making the village far more accessible than in earlier years. Until then, only 4WD vehicles could reach Theth.

The Route

  1. Skopje → Tetovo → Mavrovo → Debar → Albania border — 130 km (~2 hr 15 min). The Mavrovo route is the prettiest. Alternative: Struga–Tirana road, 30 minutes longer but flatter.
  2. Border at Lin or Tushemisht (depending on your route) — 10–20 minutes
  3. Through northern Albania to Shkoder — 200 km (~3 hr). Coastal towns Tirana and Lezha can be bypassed if you're heading directly to the Alps.
  4. Shkoder → Boge → Theth — 70 km (~2 hr including the mountain road)

A 6-hour drive is long enough that most travellers stop overnight in Shkoder at the lake. Shkoder is a worthwhile destination — Lake Shkoder, a Venetian fortress, and easy access to Lake Komani onward. See Albania complete guide.

The Theth Pass Road

The final 30 km from Boge to Theth is the most dramatic stretch. The road climbs through pine forest to the Theth Pass at 1,650 m, then descends sharply into the Theth valley. Tight bends, steep gradients, and minimal guardrails — drive carefully and watch for descending vehicles.

The road is paved throughout, but the surface can be poor in patches and gravel-strewn after summer storms. A regular rental car (compact or SUV) handles it fine in dry weather. In winter the pass is closed.

What to See in Theth

The Lock-In Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit)

A traditional 18th-century stone tower-house used historically as refuge during gjakmarrja (blood feuds). Now a small museum — €1 entry, fascinating insight into Albanian highlander culture.

Theth Church

The small Catholic church at the centre of the village, with a freshly restored bell tower. Worth a 10-minute stop.

Grunas Waterfall

A 30-metre waterfall 30 minutes' walk from the village. Cold pool below, beautiful at midday with the sun overhead.

Blue Eye of Theth

A genuine highlight — a turquoise pool fed by an underground spring, 2.5 hours' walk from the village along a dramatic canyon trail. The pool is cold (8°C year-round) but the colour is unforgettable.

The Theth–Valbona Trek

The signature hike of the Albanian Alps:

  • Distance: 17 km
  • Elevation gain: 800 m
  • Time: 6–8 hours
  • Difficulty: Strenuous walking on a well-marked trail

The trail crosses the Valbona Pass at 1,815 m, passing alpine meadows, shepherds' summer camps, and dramatic peak views (Maja e Jezercës, the second-highest peak in the Albanian Alps, dominates the route).

The hike is one-way — you walk Theth to Valbona (or vice versa). Most travellers do Theth → Valbona because the climb is gentler that way.

Logistics

  • Transport: Local minibuses or 4WD shuttles run between Theth and Valbona via the long road around (4 hours by road vs 6–8 on foot). You can leave bags with a hostel and walk light, then collect bags by minibus on the other side.
  • Trail mark: Red and white blazes throughout. Cannot get lost in summer.
  • Best months: June through early October. Outside this window the pass carries snow and the trail is dangerous.

Where to Stay

Theth

Family-run guesthouses dominate. Most include breakfast and dinner, typically traditional Albanian highland food (cornbread, byrek, lamb stew, fresh dairy). Expect €25–40 per person per night for half-board.

Recommendations:

  • Bujtina Polia — central location, friendly hosts
  • Guesthouse Lulash — slightly higher up the valley, mountain views
  • Rilinda — newer construction, comfortable rooms

Booking is essential in July–August. Most accommodations don't appear on Booking.com — use Tripadvisor, direct WhatsApp contact, or arrange through Shkoder hostels (the Wanderers, Mi Casa Es Tu Casa).

Valbona

Similar accommodation style at slightly lower altitude. Quan Hotel and Margjeka Guesthouse are popular.

Insurance and Documents

Albania requires Green Card Zone 2 insurance — €70 per rental, also covering Bosnia, Montenegro, and Croatia. The Skopje–Albania border crossings are well-organised.

At the border:

  1. Passport
  2. Driving licence
  3. Vehicle registration
  4. Green Card certificate (Zone 2)
  5. Authorization letter from Relax Rent a Car

For the cross-border procedure see cross-border driving from North Macedonia.

Practical Notes

Currency: Albania uses the lek (ALL), roughly 100 ALL = €1. Euros widely accepted in tourist areas. Cash dominates in remote villages.

Mobile data: Albanian SIM cards (Vodafone, ALBtelecom) are cheap (€10/week) and have decent coverage in the Alps. Macedonian SIM roaming may not include Albania for many tariffs.

Language: Albanian is the local language. Tourism workers speak some English; older highlanders rarely do. A phrase book helps.

Petrol: Limited stations in the mountains. Refuel at Shkoder before heading up — the next reliable station is on the descent back down.

Drinking water: Tap water is generally drinkable in Theth and Valbona but not every guesthouse has a reliable supply. Carry water on the trek.
