Quick Answer
Tetovo is North Macedonia's fourth-largest city, 45 minutes west of Skopje by rental car. The headline sights are the Painted Mosque (Šarena Džamija), the Bektashi Arabati Baba Tekke, and the Šar Mountain trailheads ten minutes from town. A half-day trip works well; a full day if you add Popova Šapka. Pickup a car at Skopje Airport, take the M-4/A2 motorway, and you're at the Painted Mosque before lunch.
Why drive to Tetovo from Skopje
Tetovo (population 53,000) is the cultural capital of North Macedonia's Albanian community. It sits at 460 m elevation under the slopes of the Šar Mountains, the limestone range that walks the Macedonia–Kosovo border. From Skopje city center it's 45 km — taxi costs €25–35 each way, the bus runs every hour but adds 30 minutes for transfers. With a rent a car Skopje Airport pickup you skip the wait and gain freedom to detour through the mountains.
The drive itself is part of the appeal. The M-4 motorway hugs the south bank of the Vardar river before climbing toward the mountains. On a clear day you'll see the snowcapped peaks of Šar Mountain rising 2,700 m to the south long before you reach the city.
Getting there: route and timing
| Route | Distance | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skopje → Tetovo (motorway A2) | 45 km | 45 min | €1.10 toll, fastest |
| Skopje → Tetovo (old road via Saraj) | 50 km | 1 h 10 min | Free, scenic |
The motorway is the obvious pick. There's one toll booth between Skopje and the Tetovo exit (€1.10 cash or card). Allow extra time for morning traffic — Tetovo is a bedroom community for many Skopje workers, so westbound flow tightens 07:00–09:00.

What to see in Tetovo
Painted Mosque (Šarena Džamija)
Built in 1438 and famously redecorated in 1833, the exterior is covered in geometric and floral panels in pastel pinks, ochres, and turquoise. It's one of the most photographed buildings in the Balkans. Free to visit; a small donation is appreciated. Quiet observation expected — leave shoes at the entrance and avoid prayer hours.
For a deeper architectural read, see our Tetovo Painted Mosque guide.
Arabati Baba Tekke (Bektashi monastery)
A 15th-century Sufi spiritual center, set in walled gardens 1 km from the mosque. Quiet, atmospheric, and one of the largest surviving Bektashi tekkes in the Balkans. Open dawn-to-dusk; donations welcome. Park along the perimeter wall — there's no formal car park.
Šar Mountain trailheads
The Vrutok and Lešok trailheads are 10–15 minutes north of Tetovo. Marked routes lead up to Popova Šapka (1,750 m, ski resort in winter, hiking and paragliding in summer). For paragliding launches see our Krushevo paragliding & skiing guide — Krushevo is a different range but the equipment culture is the same.
The Lešok Monastery (15th century, partially restored after 2001) is a worthwhile stop on the way up: free, peaceful, with view-bench picnic tables.
Where to eat
Tetovo's old bazaar runs along Marshal Tito Boulevard. Two staples that locals point visitors to:
- Burektore for byrek (flaky cheese or spinach pastry, €1.50–2.50) — best before 11:00
- Restoran Rekorzija for tavë me kos (lamb-yogurt baked dish, €6–8) and fërgesë (peppers and curd, €4)
Coffee culture is strong; espresso runs €1–1.50 at most cafés on the main square.
Parking in Tetovo
Free street parking is widely available outside the bazaar core. The bazaar itself is partly pedestrianized; a small paid lot (€0.50/hour) sits behind the Painted Mosque. With a rental car a 4-door city compact like a Hyundai i10 Automatic is ideal — narrow streets near the mosque favor smaller vehicles.
