Mostar from Skopje by Car: Complete Travel Guide

Drive from Skopje to Mostar, Bosnia's most iconic city. Route via Montenegro, the Stari Most bridge, Old Bazaar, and how to combine it with Sarajevo.

Mostar from Skopje by Car: Complete Travel Guide

Mostar is one of the most photographed cities in the Balkans — the Stari Most (Old Bridge), a 16th-century Ottoman arch over the turquoise Neretva River, is the defining image of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Driving from Skopje to Mostar is a committed journey of 600–650 km, but few road trip destinations in the region offer this combination of dramatic architecture, river scenery, and layered history.

This guide covers the route, what to see in Mostar, and how to build a 4-day Bosnia itinerary that combines Mostar with Sarajevo.

Distance and Drive Time

Skopje to Mostar: approximately 610–660 km depending on route
Drive time: 7.5–9 hours including border crossings

This is a full driving day — almost identical in length to Sarajevo. Most travelers combine Mostar and Sarajevo in a single Bosnia trip rather than driving the full distance for Mostar alone.

The Route

Via Albania and Montenegro (Recommended)

Skopje → Tetovo → Albania border (Blato/Qafe Thane) →
Peshkopi → Tirana bypass → Shkoder →
Montenegro border (Muriqan) → Podgorica →
Bosnia border at Scepan Polje → Foca →
Sarajevo → Mostar

Total: ~650 km | Drive time: ~8.5 hours | Borders: 3

This is the most scenic route — Albanian Alps, Lake Shkoder, Montenegro mountains, and the Tara River canyon. Mostar sits 130 km southwest of Sarajevo, so most travelers drive to Sarajevo first (Day 1–2) then continue to Mostar.

Via Serbia (Alternative)

Skopje → Tabanovce border → Vranje (Serbia) →
Nis → Bosnia border → Sarajevo → Mostar

Total: ~650 km | Drive time: ~8 hours | Borders: 2

Straightforward if you have Green Card coverage for Serbia. The Serbian motorway network is fast.

Mostar: What to See

Mostar is compact — the historic core is walkable in a day, though the number of day-trippers in peak season can be intense. Arrive before 9:00 AM or stay overnight for a calmer experience.

Stari Most (Old Bridge)

The Stari Most is a single-arch Ottoman bridge built in 1566 under Suleiman the Magnificent. It was destroyed in November 1993 during the Bosnian War and rebuilt in 2004 using the same technique and materials as the original — limestone quarried from the same hillsides. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bridge jumpers: The Mostari diving club has jumped from the bridge since 1566 — the height is 21 m above the river. Jumps happen regularly in summer, collected by donation.

Crossing the bridge: The cobblestones are polished smooth — flat-soled shoes are essential.

Stari Grad (Old Town)

The Ottoman old town on the west bank of the Neretva is centered on the Kujundžiluk bazaar — a pedestrianized lane of copper workshops, textile shops, and coffee houses.

Key sights:

  • Kriva Ćuprija (Crooked Bridge) — smaller Ottoman bridge upstream from Stari Most, dating to the mid-16th century; often overlooked by tourists but historically the older structure
  • Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque (1618) — one of two mosques near the bridge; minaret can be climbed for views over the river
  • Tara and Helebija towers — the two defensive towers that anchored the bridge on each bank

Practical: The bazaar is now entirely tourism-oriented. For local coffee and food away from the crowds, walk 10 minutes from the bridge in any direction.

Partisan Monument (Šehitluci) and New Bridge

The communist-era monument on the hill above the city is rarely visited but offers the best panoramic view of the Stari Most and the river valley. 20-minute walk from the old town.

The New Bridge (Lucki Most), 400 m downstream, is a modern pedestrian bridge with good views back toward the Stari Most.

War Memorial and Museum

The War Photo Exhibition on the main street documents the 1992–1995 siege of Mostar with photographs. The destruction along Bulevar, the former confrontation line, is still visible in places — bullet-pocked facades alongside renovated buildings.

Day Trips from Mostar

Kravice Waterfalls

35 km northwest of Mostar. A series of 25-metre waterfalls on the Trebižat River, surrounded by natural pools. Accessible by car — 45 minutes. Open for swimming in summer; entrance fee applies.

Blagaj Tekke

12 km southeast of Mostar. A 16th-century Dervish monastery built at the base of a 200-metre cliff, directly above the source of the Buna River. One of the most atmospheric settings in Bosnia. 15-minute drive, small boat access to the cave source.

Počitelj

25 km south of Mostar. A fortified Ottoman settlement on a hillside above the Neretva. The citadel, mosque, and hammam (bathhouse) are largely intact — a quiet alternative to Mostar's crowds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Mostar from Skopje by car? Approximately 500–550 km depending on the route, taking 6–7 hours including border stops. The most scenic route goes through Montenegro; the fastest goes directly through Serbia and Bosnia.

Is the Stari Most (Old Bridge) the original bridge? No. The original 16th-century bridge was destroyed by artillery in November 1993 during the Bosnian War. The reconstructed bridge was built using original Ottoman techniques and local limestone, reopening in 2004. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the old city.

What insurance do I need to drive to Bosnia? Green Card Zone 2 (€70 per rental) covers Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Croatia, Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria. Without it, you cannot legally enter Bosnia with a rental car.

How long should I spend in Mostar? Half a day is enough to see the main sights (Stari Most, Kujundžiluk bazaar, Kriva Cuprija). A full day allows for a relaxed lunch and exploring the Ottoman-era mosques and church towers. Mostar combines naturally with Sarajevo on a 3-day Bosnia itinerary.

Is there parking near Stari Most? Paid parking is available along the main road approaching the old city. The old city itself is partially pedestrianized — vehicles cannot reach the bridge directly. Walk from the car park (5–10 minutes). In summer, arrive early to avoid congestion.
