Festivals and Events in North Macedonia: Annual Celebrations by Car

North Macedonia's calendar is packed with cultural events, religious celebrations, and food and wine festivals that make for excellent motivations to plan a road trip. A rental car is often the best way to reach festival venues, especially those in mountain villages or on lakeshores away from public transport routes. Here is a month-by-month overview of the major events.

January – Orthodox Christmas

Date: January 7th (Julian calendar) Location: Throughout Macedonia, especially Ohrid and Skopje

North Macedonia follows the Orthodox calendar for religious holidays. Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on January 7th, and the eve (January 6th) sees candlelit processions to churches across the country. In Ohrid, the procession from St. Sophia Cathedral to the lake for the "blessing of the waters" is particularly atmospheric.

Roads can be quiet on January 7th — a good day for a drive to Ohrid or the Mavrovo region.

January 19 – Epiphany Swimming (Vodici)

Date: January 19th Location: Lake Ohrid, struga-lake-ohrid-guide">Struga, various rivers

The most visually striking Macedonian winter tradition. A priest throws a wooden cross into a lake or river, and men dive in to retrieve it — even in January (water temperature: 4–6°C). The biggest event is at Lake Ohrid in Struga. Crowds gather from early morning. Free to attend; arrive by 10:00 for a good position.

May – Skopje Marathon

Date: First or second Sunday of May Location: Skopje city center

Skopje's annual marathon attracts runners from across the Western Balkans. The course passes through Macedonia Square, along the Vardar River, and through the Old Bazaar. If you're in Skopje for this weekend, expect road closures in the city center from 08:00–14:00.

July – Galicnik Wedding (Galicnik Svadba)

Date: Second weekend of July (usually the 12th–13th) Location: Galicnik village, Mavrovo region

The most unique festival in North Macedonia. Galicnik is a mountain village above Mavrovo Lake, at 1,438 m altitude, historically inhabited by migrant workers who would return to their home village once a year to get married. The village was largely abandoned in the 20th century, but since 1997, the Galicnik Wedding has been revived as a cultural event.

A real couple gets married in traditional costume, surrounded by a multi-day celebration of folk music, dance (oro), and traditional food. Hundreds of visitors make the pilgrimage.

Getting there by car: Drive from Skopje toward Mavrovo (100 km, 1.5 hours). The road up to Galicnik village is steep and narrow — a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the final section. Park at the base of the village and walk up (20 minutes).

July–August – Ohrid Summer Festival

Date: Throughout July and August Location: Ohrid (open-air amphitheater, St. Sophia Cathedral, Old Town)

This is Macedonia's most internationally recognized cultural event. Running since 1961 and recognized by UNESCO, the festival brings opera, classical music, theater, and folklore performances to Ohrid's historic venues.

The open-air amphitheater — carved into the cliff above the lake — is the primary venue. Seeing an opera or symphony concert here, with the lake stretching out below and the Albanian mountains in the background, is unforgettable.

Practical notes:

  • Book tickets online (official festival website) 4–6 weeks in advance for popular performances.
  • Festival parking in Ohrid is challenging in peak season. Stay within walking distance or use a taxi.
  • The festival also includes free outdoor concerts in the old town squares.

August – Skopje Jazz Festival

Date: Late October (historically) — check current schedule Location: Skopje (various venues)

The Skopje Jazz Festival has at various times been held in October, but check the current year's schedule. It brings international jazz artists to Skopje for a week of performances. Main venues include the Universal Hall and various club spaces in the city.

September – Grozdober (Wine Harvest Festival)

Date: Late September – early October Location: Kavadarci (Tikveš wine region)

Macedonia's wine harvest festival celebrates the grape harvest in the Tikveš wine region. Kavadarci, the main town, holds public events including grape-treading demonstrations, wine tasting, and folk performances. The entire Tikveš valley sees wine-related events throughout the harvest period.

Getting there: 100 km south of Skopje on the A1 motorway (1.5 hours). The same trip can be combined with winery visits — see our Macedonian wine tourism guide.

October – Skopje Film Festival

Date: October Location: Skopje (cinema venues citywide)

An international film festival focusing on European and world cinema. Screenings at multiple cinemas across Skopje. Good alternative to outdoor activities during the cooler autumn months.

All Year – Religious Holidays and Local Celebrations

  • St. George's Day (Jurjevden) — May 6th. Major holiday, many Macedonians picnic in nature. Good day for a drive to Matka Canyon or Mavrovo.
  • Easter (Orthodox) — Varies. Week-long celebrations with midnight church services and traditional lamb roasting on Easter Sunday.
  • Ilinden (August 2nd) — National holiday. Celebrations at Kruševo (the site of the 1903 Macedonian uprising). A meaningful historical site worth visiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest festival in North Macedonia? The Ohrid Summer Festival (Ohridsko Leto) is the most internationally recognized event, running since 1961 with classical music, opera, and theatre performances in the ancient lakefront amphitheater. Domestically, the Galicnik Wedding (Galičnik Svadba) is considered the most culturally significant event — a revival of authentic Macedonian village wedding traditions held annually on the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul.

When is the best time to visit North Macedonia for events? July and August are the peak months for outdoor festivals: the Ohrid Summer Festival, Galicnik Wedding, Strumica Carnival summer events, and various lake and mountain gatherings all fall in this period. September brings the Grozdober wine harvest. For Orthodox religious holidays, Easter and Ilinden (August 2nd) are the most significant across the country.

Do I need to book accommodation in advance for festivals? Yes — particularly for the Ohrid Summer Festival and the Galicnik Wedding. Ohrid's accommodation capacity is stretched in July–August regardless of the festival; add a major event and rooms disappear weeks in advance. For Galicnik specifically, many visitors do a day trip from Skopje or Ohrid rather than staying overnight in the small mountain village.
