Tetovo sits 45 minutes west of Skopje at the foot of the Šar Mountains, and most visitors only know it for one thing: the Painted Mosque (Šarena Džamija) with its kaleidoscopic floral exterior. But the town and the surrounding mountain range pack enough into a day trip to fill 8 productive hours — Ottoman heritage, a panoramic ski-resort cable car, an alpine lake, and a 14th-century monastery that still functions as a working community.
This guide covers the practical route, the must-see stops, where to eat, and how the Šar Mountains compare to other Macedonian outdoor day trips like Mavrovo or Matka.
Route Overview
| Stop | Distance from Skopje | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Tetovo (Painted Mosque) | 45 km | 45 min |
| Lešok Monastery | 51 km | 55 min |
| Popova Šapka cable car | 65 km | 1h 15min |
| Total round-trip distance | ~140 km | — |
Departure suggestion: leave Skopje at 08:00, return by 18:00. With a light schedule you'll have time for lunch in Tetovo, the cable car ride, and an alpine walk before sunset.
Getting There: The Drive
Take the A2 highway westbound from Skopje. Speed limit 130 km/h, dual-carriageway, no tolls. Exit at Tetovo (signed). The road climbs gently — you can see the Šar Mountains ahead the whole way, with snow on the peaks until late May most years.
Fuel: top up before leaving Skopje. Tetovo has stations but rural sections beyond have fewer.
Parking: Tetovo's old quarter near the Painted Mosque has free street parking. Popova Šapka has a large free car park at the cable car base.
Stop 1: The Painted Mosque (Šarena Džamija)
The 1438-built mosque was painted in its current floral style in 1833. The exterior is unique in the Balkans — pastel rosettes, geometric panels, painted vines crawling up the minaret. The interior is equally elaborate, with Mecca-facing murals and hand-carved wooden ceilings.
Practical:
- Free entry (donations welcome)
- Open: 09:00–17:00 daily; closed during Friday prayers (12:30–14:00)
- Dress code: women cover head and shoulders (scarves provided at the entrance); men long trousers, no shorts
- Photography: allowed inside without flash. The exterior is the showstopper for photographers — early morning or late afternoon for best light.
Allow 30–45 minutes including walking the surrounding old quarter (cobblestone lanes, Ottoman houses, the Arabati Baba Tekke just 200m away — a sufi monastery with peaceful gardens).
Stop 2: Lešok Monastery
10 km north of Tetovo through the village of Lešok, the Holy Mother of God Monastery is a 14th-century Orthodox complex with a working monastic community. Two churches, frescoes from the 14th and 19th centuries, and a small museum.
The monastery sits at 800m elevation surrounded by walnut groves. The view back toward Tetovo and the Polog plain is one of the best in Macedonia. Allow 45 minutes.
Tip: the village of Lešok has a couple of small konobas (tavernas) with grilled lamb and homemade rakija. Lunch here costs €8–12 per person and beats anything Tetovo town offers.
Stop 3: Popova Šapka Cable Car
From Tetovo, drive 20 km up the Šar Mountains to Popova Šapka — Macedonia's premier ski resort and a brilliant summer destination. The road climbs from 460m (Tetovo) to 1,750m (resort base) in steady switchbacks, opening views of the Polog plain below.
Cable car:
- Year-round operation (weather permitting)
- Adult round trip: €5–7
- Top station: 2,255m
- Ride duration: 12 minutes one-way
- Hours: 09:00–17:00 in summer, 08:30–16:00 in winter
From the top station, a marked 2-hour return hike leads to the Trim peak (2,310m). On clear days you see Lake Ohrid 100 km south, the Albanian Alps west, and Mount Vodno east. Trail is well-marked but wear proper boots — loose stones, snow patches into July.
Alternative: drive past the cable car to Lake Bogovinje (1,910m, 3 km off the main road) — small alpine lake with picnic spots, no facilities, no fee. Add 90 minutes round-trip.
Lunch & Coffee

| Konoba Lešok (Lešok village) | Grilled lamb, homemade bread, rakija | €8–10 pp |
| Hotel Slavija (Popova Šapka) | Mountain hotel restaurant — soup, polenta, lamb | €12–18 pp |
| Café Marquis (Tetovo old quarter) | Strong coffee, pastries | €1–3 |
Winter vs. Summer
Winter (December–March): Popova Šapka is fully operational as a ski resort. Lift passes from €15/day, equipment rental €15/day. The area gets 3–5m of snow annually. Cable car runs daily (subject to weather). The road from Tetovo is plowed but carry winter tires + chains — by law, every rental car between November 15 and March 15 has winter tires fitted, but chains are needed above 1,500m on heavy snow days.
Summer (May–September): hiking, mountain biking, paragliding from the cable car top station. Wildflower season peaks late May–early July. Temperatures at the resort base 10–15°C cooler than Skopje — pack a fleece even on July visits.
Spring (April–May): unpredictable. Snow patches above 2,000m into late May. Lower trails clear from April.
Autumn (September–November): crisp air, fewer tourists, good visibility for distance shots. Restaurants in Popova Šapka start closing weekday operation in October.
Why a Day Trip Rental Beats a Tour
| Cost | Self-drive | Group tour |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle rental (1 day, economy) | €25–35 | — |
| Fuel (140 km × 6L/100km × €1.40) | €12 | included |
| Cable car × 2 | €12 | usually €5–10 extra |
| Lunch | €15–20 | sometimes included |
| Total per person, 2 ppl | ~€32–45 | €50–70 |
| Pace | your own | fixed |
| Stops | flexible | fixed |
| Lešok detour possible? | yes | rarely |
Plus a self-drive lets you start at 08:00 (peak photo light at the mosque) instead of the typical 09:30 tour pickup.
Day Trip Variations
Tetovo + Mavrovo (full day, 7–8 hours driving + sights): combine the painted mosque with Bigorski Monastery and Mavrovo Lake. 220 km total. Best on long summer days.
Tetovo + Skopje (half day): if you only have a morning, do Tetovo + lunch + Lešok and be back in Skopje by 15:00 for the rest of the city.
Multi-day Šar: 2-day stay at Popova Šapka with full hiking schedule. Hotel Slavija from €60/night. Especially good in late June–early July.
Driving Notes
- Speed cameras on the A2 between Skopje and Tetovo. Stay at 130 km/h on the highway, 80 km/h on the climb to Popova Šapka.
- Wildlife: deer and wild boar around Lešok at dusk. Drive carefully on the village roads.
- Mobile signal: drops out on the cable car climb. Pre-download offline maps for Popova Šapka area.

Tetovo is criminally underrated by most Skopje visitors. A single day buys you a UNESCO-tier mosque, an alpine ski lift, a working monastery, and one of the best mountain panoramas in the Balkans — at less than half the cost of a packaged tour.
