Winter Driving in North Macedonia: Snow, Tyres, and Mountain Passes

Winter driving in North Macedonia: snow tyre requirements, mountain pass conditions, Popova Sapka and Mavrovo access, and how to stay safe on icy roads.

Winter Driving in North Macedonia: Snow, Tyres, and Mountain Passes

Winter transforms North Macedonia into a landscape of snow-covered peaks, frozen lakeshores, and near-empty roads. For rental car drivers, it also means thinking carefully about tyres, passes, and mountain conditions. This guide covers everything you need to drive safely and confidently during the winter months — roughly December through March.

Do You Need Winter Tyres in North Macedonia?

Yes, for mountain driving. North Macedonia does not have a blanket legal requirement for winter tyres on all roads, but winter (or all-season) tyres are required on the following road categories when snow or ice is present:

  • Roads marked with the "Winter road equipment obligatory" sign (white car on blue background with snowflake)
  • All mountain passes above 1,000 m elevation during the winter season
  • Roads in and around ski resorts: Popova Sapka, Zare Lazarevski (Mavrovo), Krushevo

All Relax Rent a Car vehicles are fitted with winter tyres between 1 November and 31 March. If you are collecting the car outside this period but travelling to mountain areas, ask us — we can arrange winter tyres on request.

Snow chains are advisable for the Galicica pass road to Ohrid and the upper Mavrovo roads during heavy snowfall. We can supply snow chains with your rental on request.

Winter Road Conditions by Region

Skopje and the Vardar Valley

Skopje itself sits at 245 m elevation. Snow falls several times each winter but typically does not settle for more than a few days in the city. Roads are gritted and cleared promptly. Driving in Skopje in winter is straightforward for most conditions.

The A1/A2 motorway toward Ohrid is generally well maintained, but the section between Kičevo and Struga climbs over 900 m and can ice up overnight. The motorway authority posts road condition updates on www.avp.mk.

Ohrid and Pelister (Southwest)

  • Lake Ohrid shoreline road: Low elevation (693 m), rarely icy
  • Pelister National Park: Upper roads can be blocked above 1,500 m from December onward
  • Galicica pass road (to Resen): May close temporarily during heavy snowfall; check conditions before departure

Mavrovo National Park (Northwest)

  • Tetovo → Mavrovo road: Reliable in winter as far as Mavrovo village
  • Zare Lazarevski ski resort road: Usually passable with winter tyres; snow chains recommended after heavy snowfall
  • Debar road via Mavrovo: Can close in extreme conditions — always check before attempting in winter

Popova Sapka (near Tetovo)

The mountain road from Tetovo to Popova Sapka ski resort climbs steeply from 450 m to 1,780 m. Snow chains or 4WD strongly recommended after fresh snowfall. The resort road is typically gritted but not guaranteed. If you are planning a day trip to Popova Sapka, start early — afternoon returns can coincide with icy conditions as temperatures drop.

Bitola and Pelister

The road from Bitola into Pelister National Park rises quickly. The upper sections above 1,200 m should be treated as mountain roads in winter.

Mountain Passes to Know

Pass Elevation Typical Status Notes
Suva Gora (A2 motorway) ~900 m Open, gritted Main Skopje–Ohrid route
Galicica (old Ohrid–Resen road) 1,400+ m Occasional closure Check before travelling
Mavrovo plateau ~1,200 m Open with winter tyres 4WD helpful in heavy snow
Popova Sapka approach 1,780 m Open when gritted Chains advisable
Strеža pass (Kičevo area) ~1,100 m Open, occasional ice Allow extra time

Checking Road Conditions

  • AVP website (www.avp.mk): Official road authority — posts daily condition reports in Macedonian. Use a browser translator.
  • Radio station Kanal 77 (Skopje): Traffic bulletins in the morning rush (in Macedonian)
  • Our team: Call or WhatsApp us before a mountain drive — we receive local condition updates and can advise on road status.

Winter Driving Practical Tips

Before you depart:

  • Top up fuel — mountain stations may be closed or unreachable in heavy snow
  • Check the weather forecast for your destination, not just Skopje
  • Leave earlier than planned — winter roads require lower speeds

On the road:

  • Reduce speed well before corners on mountain roads — ice often forms in shaded bends
  • Keep a larger gap than usual behind other vehicles
  • If you encounter a snow plough, stay well back and do not overtake
  • If you slide, steer gently into the direction you want to go and ease off the accelerator — do not brake hard

Vehicle settings:

  • On ice, select a higher gear to reduce wheel spin when pulling away
  • Diesel engines warm up more slowly — allow the engine to reach operating temperature before demanding performance on a mountain climb
  • Use engine braking on long descents rather than riding the brakes

What Our Rental Cars Include in Winter

All Relax Rent a Car winter vehicles (November–March) come with:

  • Winter or all-season tyres (M+S rated or better)
  • Full-size spare tyre
  • Jump leads
  • Reflective triangle and vest (legally required in North Macedonia)
  • First aid kit

Snow chains can be added to any booking at the time of reservation. Our team will fit them and show you how to remove them.

Skiing Trips: Recommended Vehicles

For trips to Popova Sapka or Mavrovo ski resort, we recommend:

  • Dacia Duster 4x4 (diesel) — Best option for mountain road confidence
  • Any vehicle with winter tyres + chains — Adequate for groomed resort access roads
  • Economy cars — Suitable for Mavrovo village; less suitable for the upper Popova Sapka road in heavy snowfall conditions

Visibility and Daylight

North Macedonia in December and January has around 9–10 hours of daylight. Plan mountain drives to avoid arriving in darkness, as unlit mountain roads significantly increase risk. Sunset in Skopje in December is around 16:00.

Fog is common in the Vardar Valley and around Lake Ohrid in winter mornings. If you are driving from Skopje to Ohrid, expect potential fog between Veles and Negotino — reduce speed and use fog lights appropriately.
