Skiing in North Macedonia: Mountain Resorts and Winter Road Trips

Best ski resorts in North Macedonia — Popova Šapka, Mavrovo, Kruševo. Winter driving guide for reaching Macedonian mountains by rental car from Skopje.

Skiing in North Macedonia: Mountain Resorts and Winter Road Trips

North Macedonia has three ski resorts and a winter tradition that surprises most visitors. The country's mountains — the Šar Planina, Bistra, and Baba ranges — receive substantial snowfall from December through March, making them a genuine skiing destination without the price tag of Alpine resorts. A rental car is by far the best way to reach these mountain destinations from Skopje.

The Three Main Resorts

1. Popova Šapka

Distance from Skopje: 95 km, ~2 hours (via Tetovo) Altitude: 1,780–2,500 m Season: December–March (variable)

Popova Šapka is North Macedonia's largest ski resort, located in the Šar Planina mountain range above Tetovo. The resort has 22 km of marked runs — a mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced pistes — accessed by a combination of chairlifts and drag lifts.

The drive: From Skopje, take the A2 motorway west toward Tetovo (44 km). Exit at Tetovo and take the mountain road up to Popova Šapka (30 km, approximately 45 minutes). The road is serpentine with significant altitude gain — snow chains or winter tires are mandatory on this road from November through March. The road is regularly cleared by snowplows.

The resort: Infrastructure at Popova Šapka is modest but functional. Several guesthouses and small hotels operate on the mountain (many are basic). Day visitors from Skopje are common — many Macedonians drive up for weekend skiing.

Ski school and rental: Available on-site. The ski school has instructors who speak English, Serbian, and Albanian.

Lift pass prices: Significantly cheaper than Western European resorts. A full-day adult pass approximately €20–25. Equipment rental €10–15/day.

What to know: Popova Šapka lacks the infrastructure of larger Alpine resorts. Après-ski is limited. Bring your own food or eat at the mountain restaurant (simple, cheap Macedonian food). Accommodation books up on weekends — reserve ahead.

2. Mavrovo

Distance from Skopje: 115 km, ~2 hours (via Gostivar) Altitude: 1,250–1,930 m Season: December–February (shorter season than Popova Šapka)

Mavrovo National Park is more famous for its lake and scenery than pure skiing, but the Mavrovo ski center has 20 km of runs and is popular with families. The resort sits above the beautiful Mavrovo Lake.

The drive: A2 motorway west from Skopje toward Gostivar. From Gostivar, take the road south toward Mavrovo — the drive passes the Mavrovo monastery (worth a stop) and the lake before reaching the resort.

What makes Mavrovo special: The combination of skiing with some of the most beautiful scenery in North Macedonia. On clear days, the views from the upper slopes over the frozen Mavrovo Lake and the surrounding peaks are extraordinary.

Accommodation: Mavrovo town (at the lake shore) has better hotels than Popova Šapka — including the Hotel Radika and several smaller guesthouses. A base in Mavrovo village allows ski day trips combined with snowshoeing and winter hiking in the national park.

Ski pass: Similar pricing to Popova Šapka.

3. Kruševo

Distance from Skopje: 135 km, ~2 hours (via Veles and Prilep) Altitude: 1,350 m (town) — Macedonia's highest town Season: December–March

Kruševo is the smallest and most traditional of the three options — a small historic town that functions primarily as a mountain destination year-round, with skiing available on the Bushova ski center above the town.

Why Kruševo: The town itself is remarkable — entirely built of traditional stone houses on a hillside, largely unchanged architecturally since the early 20th century. In summer it's a retreat from the Skopje heat; in winter it offers gentle skiing and a genuinely cozy mountain atmosphere.

History note: Kruševo was the site of the Ilinden Uprising in August 1903 — Macedonian rebels declared a short-lived Republic (the Kruševo Republic) for 10 days before Ottoman forces suppressed it. The Makedonium monument on the hill above town commemorates this history.

Ski terrain: Primarily beginner and intermediate slopes. Not for advanced skiers looking for challenge, but ideal for families.

Winter Driving to Macedonia's Mountains

Essential winter driving preparation:

  • Winter tires: Required by law in Macedonia from November 15 to March 15 on mountainous roads. Rental cars from Relax Rent a Car are equipped with winter tires during this period upon request — confirm when booking.
  • Snow chains: Carry chains for mountain roads, especially for the Popova Šapka and Mavrovo approaches. Roads are plowed but can be icy early morning.
  • Departure time: Leave Skopje by 08:00 on ski days. Mountain roads can freeze overnight and are best driven after the temperature rises.
  • Fuel: Fill up in Skopje or Tetovo/Gostivar before the mountain ascent. Petrol stations on the mountain are limited.
  • Weather check: Check weather forecasts before departure. Heavy snowfall can close mountain roads (usually for 2–4 hours until plows clear them).

Combining Skiing with Other Winter Activities

North Macedonia's mountains offer more than skiing:

Snowshoeing: Mavrovo and the Šar Planina have marked snowshoe trails. No guide needed for shorter routes.

Skopje to Ski in a Day: With an early start (07:30), a full day of skiing at Popova Šapka or Mavrovo, and a return to Skopje by 19:00 is entirely feasible. Many Skopje families do this on winter weekends.

Winter photography: The frozen Mavrovo Lake surrounded by snow-covered peaks is one of North Macedonia's most photogenic scenes. Early morning light (08:00–10:00) is best.

Hot springs: On the return from skiing, the Negorski Banji thermal springs near Gevgelija (if coming from Mavrovo via a southern return route) are a perfect post-ski recovery.

What to Pack for Winter Mountain Driving in Macedonia

  • Warm layers (mountain temperatures can drop to -15°C)
  • Waterproof boots
  • Sunglasses (snow glare at altitude)
  • Portable phone charger (cold affects battery life)
  • Snacks and water (mountain restaurants can be crowded)
  • Roadside emergency kit (the rental car should have one — check before departing)
