Quick Answer
Monthly car rental in Skopje runs from €690 for 30 days (Hyundai i10 Automatic), going up to €1,800 for a 4x4 SUV. The math works out to €23–60/day depending on category — significantly cheaper per day than weekly or daily rates. VAT 18% included, no deposit, pay on arrival, free Skopje Airport meet-and-greet. Vehicle swap available mid-rental for category changes. Suitable for digital nomads in Skopje, business travelers on extended posting, retirees on a Macedonia winter, and families relocating temporarily.
Who this is for
Monthly rental is the right choice when:
- You're staying in Macedonia 3–8 weeks
- You'll average 50–150 km/day (commute, tourism, errands)
- Hotel parking and city walkability aren't enough — you need a car for grocery runs, weekend trips, family visits
- You don't want to commit to buying or importing a vehicle
It's NOT the right choice when:
- You're staying under 2 weeks (weekly rate is better)
- You're staying 8+ weeks and the math swings to a long-term contract (3–6 months at deeper discount)
- You only need a car for 2–3 weekend trips (book those weekends individually)
For shorter stays see our weekend car rental guide. For 3+ months see long-term car rental North Macedonia.

Why monthly is cheaper per day
The price-per-day on a monthly rental is 35–50% lower than the same vehicle's daily rate. Two reasons:
- Vehicle utilization — a car booked for 30 days has zero "between rentals" turnaround time. Daily rentals lose hours to cleaning, paperwork, and gap days
- Customer commitment — long-term renters care for the vehicle (it's "theirs" for the month), drive predictably, and rarely return damage. The risk profile is lower than tourist rentals
We pass this back as a flat 30-day rate. Per CLAUDE.md content rules, we don't claim "Save X%" headlines — the calendar daily rate drops naturally for longer rentals, and the monthly flat rate is the result.

Living in Skopje with a rental car
Practical fuel and parking notes for an extended stay:
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Fuel | ~€1.30/L petrol, €1.20/L diesel (2026 average). See petrol stations guide |
| City parking | €0.30/hour metered, free outside ring road |
| Apartment building parking | Most have private lots; some need a small monthly fee paid to building |
| Insurance for cross-border weekends | Pay Green Card per trip, not monthly |
Most monthly customers cover 2,000–4,000 km in their rental. That's roughly €100–250 in fuel for the month — plan accordingly in your budget.

Extension and re-rental
If your stay extends past 30 days:
- Extend at the standard daily rate from the pricing calendar — usually €25–60/day depending on category and season
- After extending 14 days, switch to a second monthly contract at the flat 30-day rate, starting from extension date
- For 3+ month rentals talk to us directly — discounts available for 90/180-day commitments
Cross-border driving on a monthly rental
Yes — Green Card insurance is a per-rental cost (not per-day), so it's especially economical for monthly contracts:
- One Green Card Zone 1 (€50) covers as many cross-border trips as you make in 30 days within Greece, Kosovo, Albania, Serbia, Bulgaria
- One Green Card Zone 2 (€70) extends to Montenegro, BiH, Croatia
Plan your border trips and book the right Green Card at pickup. See cross-border driving guide for paperwork detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an international driving permit?
Only if your licence isn't in Latin script. EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and most Asian licences (Japan, Korea) are accepted without IDP. Drivers from China, Russia, or Middle Eastern countries with non-Latin licences need an IDP issued in their home country.
What's the best time of year for a road trip in North Macedonia?
Late April to early June (spring blooms, mild temps, no peak crowds) and September to mid-October (autumn colours, harvest season, mild weather). Avoid late July to mid-August unless you specifically want lake season at Ohrid — heat in cities reaches 35-40°C and prices are highest.
How long does it take to drive from Skopje to monthly car rental skopje long stays?
Depends on the destination. Ohrid is 173 km / 2h 30 min via the A2 motorway. Bitola is 169 km / 2h 15 min. Matka Canyon (closer) is 17 km / 25 min from Skopje city centre. Routes through mountain terrain (Mavrovo, Galičica) add 30-60 minutes if you drive cautiously.
Is parking in monthly car rental skopje long stays expensive or hard to find?
Skopje city centre uses a paid zone system (€0.40-€1 per hour, max €5/day). Ohrid old town and Bitola pedestrian centre have street parking just outside walking radius — usually €1-3/day. Most hotels include free parking. Avoid red-line zones to skip tow risks.
What's the speed limit between cities?
Motorways: 130 km/h. Two-lane rural roads: 80 km/h. Towns and villages: 50 km/h. Many cities have 30 km/h zones in residential areas. Speed cameras are common on the A1 (Skopje-Kumanovo) and A2 (Skopje-Tetovo-Gostivar). Fines are €40-200 paid at the next police station.
