If you're traveling to North Macedonia from outside Europe, choosing where to fly into can save a few hundred euros — but it adds a 4-hour drive at the start of your trip. Sofia (Bulgaria) often has cheaper international flights than Skopje (Macedonia), especially via Wizz Air, Ryanair, and the long-haul connections through Frankfurt or Istanbul. Skopje is closer to your destination but has fewer flight options and higher fares.
This guide compares the two airports for travelers ultimately heading into North Macedonia.
The Two Airports at a Glance
| Skopje (SKP) | Sofia (SOF) | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Skopje city | 23 km | 240 km |
| Drive time to Skopje | 25 min | 4 hours |
| Annual passengers (2025) | ~3 million | ~9 million |
| Flight choice | Limited, mostly European | Wide European + budget carriers |
| Average return Western Europe → ... | €180–280 | €100–200 |
| Long-haul (US/Asia connections) | Via IST, FRA, VIE | Via FRA, MUC, IST, ZRH |
The price gap for a return ticket from London to Macedonia: Sofia typically €120–160, Skopje €180–250. Saving ~€80 per person per round-trip.
When to Fly Into Sofia
Sofia makes sense if:
- You're price-sensitive and the €80–120 saving per traveler matters more than 4 extra hours of driving.
- You want to see Sofia, Plovdiv, or Rila Monastery as part of your trip — getting back to Sofia for the return flight isn't extra; it's part of the itinerary.
- You're flying from a Wizz Air / Ryanair hub (London, Birmingham, Berlin, Bergamo, Brussels-Charleroi). Sofia has 30+ such routes; Skopje has 10.
- You need a long-haul flight from outside Europe. Sofia has more direct US, Middle East, and Asian routes than Skopje.
When to Fly Into Skopje
Skopje makes sense if:
- Your trip is short (3–5 days). The 4-hour drive each way eats too much of a short vacation.
- You're traveling with kids, elderly parents, or heavy luggage. Two long airport-to-city drives are exhausting.
- You're visiting the western half of Macedonia (Ohrid, Mavrovo, Tetovo, Bitola). Sofia adds a full day of driving to a western trip.
- You don't want a cross-border rental with the Green Card and possible drop-off fees.
Cross-Border Rental Logistics
If you fly into Sofia and want to drive west, two options:
Rent in Sofia, drive into Macedonia, drop off in Skopje (one-way). Rare and expensive — most Bulgarian rentals charge €150–300 one-way fees. Macedonian companies generally don't have Sofia offices.
Rent in Sofia, drive Sofia → Skopje, return to Sofia at the end. Standard round-trip rental with Bulgarian company. You drive ~480 km extra over the trip. The Macedonian portion is fine but the rental adds €40–60/day vs. Macedonian rates.
Bus / train Sofia → Skopje, then rent in Skopje. Sofia–Skopje bus is €25 each way, 5 hours, multiple daily departures. Pick up our rental in Skopje for €22/day. Often the cheapest option for solo travelers.
Fly Sofia → Skopje (Wizz Air, ~€60–120). 1 hour. Convenient if the schedule works.
For families and longer trips, rent on the Macedonian side (cheaper rates, free airport pickup, no cross-border drop-off fees).

The Driving Experience: Sofia → Skopje
We've covered this in detail in our Skopje to Sofia driving guide. Quick recap:
- 240 km on highway A6/A1
- 1 border crossing (Deve Bair, 24/7)
- 4 hours total with stops
- No tolls Macedonian side, e-vignette Bulgarian side (€15 weekly)
- Fuel ~€20 each way
Practical Recommendation
For most leisure travelers headed to Macedonia, the best combo is:
- Fly Skopje if you can find tickets within 20% of Sofia rates.
- Fly Sofia + bus if Skopje is much pricier and you don't mind 5 hours of bus.
- Fly Sofia + rent in Sofia only if you specifically want to see Bulgaria too (plovdiv-bulgaria-travel-guide">Plovdiv, Rila, Bansko).
Either way, rent on the Macedonian side. Macedonian rentals start at €22/day with no deposit, free Skopje Airport pickup, and prices in EUR with VAT included. For comparison, Bulgarian rates run €40–60/day with €1,000+ blocked deposits.
