Halkidiki Beach Trip from Skopje by Car (2026): Full Driving Guide

Drive from Skopje to Halkidiki Greece in 4 hours. Sithonia vs Kassandra peninsulas, border crossing, parking, the best beaches, and a 3-day itinerary.

Halkidiki Beach Trip from Skopje by Car (2026): Full Driving Guide

Halkidiki — the three-fingered peninsula south of Thessaloniki — is the closest swimmable Mediterranean coast to Skopje. For Macedonians and travellers in Skopje, it's the default summer escape: turquoise water, pine forests reaching to the sand, organized beach bars, and prices that beat the better-known Greek islands. The drive is short enough that families do it as a 3-day weekend.

This guide covers the full route from Skopje, which peninsula to choose, where to park and stay, and how to make the trip work in a rental car.

Distance and Drive Time

Skopje to Halkidiki (Sithonia or Kassandra): approximately 290–340 km Drive time: 4–4.5 hours including border Border: 1 (Macedonia–Greece at Bogorodica/Evzonoi)

Halkidiki has three "fingers" — Kassandra (west), Sithonia (middle), and Athos (east, restricted to monks). Most beach tourism is split between Kassandra and Sithonia. From Skopje, you reach the base of the peninsula in about 3.5 hours; the extra 30–60 minutes depends on how far down the finger you go.

Choosing the Peninsula

Kassandra (the western finger)

The more developed peninsula. Larger resorts, more tourist infrastructure, busier beaches, and more nightlife. Towns like Hanioti, Pefkochori, and Kallithea are full of restaurants, beach bars, and water sports operators. Best for first-time visitors and families wanting amenities within walking distance.

Drive time from Skopje to Hanioti: ~4 hours, ~310 km

Sithonia (the middle finger)

Quieter, more natural, with smaller beaches tucked into pine-covered coves. Vourvourou, Sarti, and Kalamitsi are the standout villages. Sithonia is the choice for travellers who want quieter beaches and don't need a full-resort experience.

Drive time from Skopje to Vourvourou: ~4.25 hours, ~330 km

Recommendation

For a first trip with a rental car, Sithonia is more rewarding — the parking is easier, the beaches are more photogenic, and the 90 km coastal road around the peninsula is one of the most scenic drives in Greece. For a party-and-resort trip, choose Kassandra.

The Route

The driving from Skopje is direct:

  1. Skopje → Bogorodica border — 170 km on the M-1/E-75 motorway (~1 hour 45 min). Tolls: roughly €2.50 in tolls on the Macedonian side.
  2. Border crossing at Bogorodica/Evzonoi — 15–60 minutes depending on summer queue. In peak July/August weekends, allow 1–2 hours; midweek mornings are usually quick.
  3. Evzonoi → Thessaloniki bypass → Halkidiki — 120–170 km depending on which finger. The Greek motorway A1 is fast (€2.40 in tolls). The exit for Halkidiki is signed clearly south of Thessaloniki.
  4. Onto the peninsula — single-lane country roads from the base of the finger to your destination.

Insurance and Documents

Greece requires Green Card Zone 1 coverage for your rental car. This is a €50 supplement when you book with us. Without it, your insurance does not cover you across the border.

At the border:

  1. Passport (Schengen — Greece is in Schengen, North Macedonia is not, so expect both passport and customs checks)
  2. Driving licence
  3. Vehicle registration
  4. Green Card certificate
  5. Authorization letter from Relax Rent a Car

Greek police regularly check for this paperwork on the road, especially during the summer tourist season. See cross-border driving from North Macedonia for a complete checklist.

Best Beaches

On Sithonia

  • Kavourotrypes — pine-fringed coves between Armenistis and Sarti. Crystal water, no facilities. Bring lunch.
  • Karydi — the postcard beach of Sithonia. Turquoise water, white pebbles. Very crowded in August.
  • Kalamitsi — long sandy beach at the southern tip. Beach bars with sun beds (€10–15 for two).
  • Lagonisi — south of Nikiti, easily accessible, family-friendly with shallow water.

On Kassandra

  • Sani Beach — luxury resort area but the public beach is excellent.
  • Possidi Cape — the southwestern tip, with a long sand spit projecting into the sea.
  • Kalithea — long organized beach with all amenities; busier but very accessible.
  • Glarokavos — quieter sandy beach near Pefkochori.

Parking on the Peninsula

Most beaches have roadside parking (free) or organized lots (€2–5 per day). The major beach towns get crowded by 11 AM in peak season — arrive early or after 2 PM. Resort towns like Hanioti and Sarti have public parking 5–10 minutes from the main beaches.

Don't park on the soft shoulders without checking — Greek police ticket aggressively in August, and the fine starts at €40.

Where to Stay
