Ohrid's dining scene is defined by two things: the lake and the Old Town's stone-paved restaurants. Unlike Skopje, which has a more urban food culture, Ohrid offers an experience that is slower, more scenic, and deeply tied to its freshwater environment. If you're staying near the lake or arriving by rental car from Skopje, here is where and what to eat.
The Star Ingredient: Ohrid Trout
Ohrid trout (pastrmka) is not found anywhere else in the world. It is endemic to Lake Ohrid, where the extraordinary water clarity and depth (up to 294 m) create unique conditions. However, it is critically endangered and legally protected — fishing and sale of Ohrid trout has been strictly controlled since 2004.
What you will find on menus is Californian trout (rainbow trout) farmed in the lake and the surrounding rivers. This is still excellent — freshly caught, well-prepared — but be skeptical if a restaurant claims to serve genuine Ohrid trout, as this is either farmed rainbow trout or illegally obtained.
What to order: Grilled or fried trout with seasonal vegetables, a shopska salad, and local white wine. Simple but outstanding when done well.
Old Town Restaurants (Views and Atmosphere)
The Old Town's restaurant scene is concentrated around the lakefront below the Church of St. John at Kaneo and along the pedestrian streets near Samuil's Fortress.
Top picks:
- Restaurant Antiko — Set inside a restored Ottoman-era house in the Old Town. One of Ohrid's most atmospheric dining spaces. The menu focuses on traditional Macedonian food with occasional fusion touches. Trout, lamb, and seasonal vegetable dishes are consistently good. Book ahead in July–August.
- Neim Restaurant — On the lakefront below Kaneo. Probably the most photographed dining spot in Ohrid, with tables literally hanging over the water. Trout is the specialty. Prices are higher than comparable restaurants but the setting justifies it.
- Restaurant Letnica — Old stone building near the amphitheater. Traditional menu, excellent tavče gravče and grilled meats. Good value.
Lakeside Restaurants (Casual and Affordable)
The strip of restaurants along the lakefront south of the town center (toward the Riviera) is where locals go for everyday dining. Less touristy, lower prices.
- Ribarski Dom ("Fishermen's House") — A large, no-frills restaurant popular with locals. Fresh fish from the lake (rainbow trout, carp, eels), sold by the kilogram. Outdoor terrace facing the water.
- Restaurant Bijelo — Family-run, on the water's edge about 2 km south of town. Grilled meats and fish, excellent fresh-squeezed lemonade. Free parking adjacent.
- Ezero Restaurant — "Lake" restaurant — one of the simpler, more affordable options on the riviera strip. Consistent quality for grilled fish and salads.
Near St. Naum Monastery (30 km South)
The road to St. Naum monastery passes through smaller villages with waterfront restaurants. Stop at:
- Gradište Restaurant — In the Gradište area, roughly 15 km south of Ohrid. Rustic stone building on the lake, fresh trout, reasonable prices.
- Restaurant at St. Naum — Inside the monastery complex. Basic menu (salads, grilled meats, beer) but the setting — next to the sacred springs where the Crn Drim river sources from the lake — is remarkable.
Old Bazaar and City Center (Casual Eating)
Ohrid's small bazaar near the harbor has cafés and sandwich shops for a quick bite between sightseeing.
- Café Metropol — Good coffee, cakes, and light meals. Terrace facing the harbor.
- Sandwich and burek shops along the main market street: ideal for a breakfast or pre-hike snack.
Practical Dining Tips for Ohrid
- Fish restaurants charge by weight: Order the trout "on the side" so you see the fish before it's cooked. 400–600g is a typical serving for one person.
- Summer reservations: In July–August, popular Old Town restaurants fill by 19:30. Arrive early or book by phone (most have someone who speaks English).
- Payment: Most restaurants in the Old Town accept card. Smaller lakeside places may be cash-only.
- Parking: Old Town restaurants — park at the amphitheater lot (€0.50/hour). Lakeside restaurants generally have roadside parking available.
Best Wine Pairings with Lake Ohrid Food
Ohrid's fish-heavy menu pairs well with:
- Žilavka — Light Macedonian white, mineral notes. Perfect with grilled trout.
- Smederevka — Crisp, refreshing white from the Ohrid region.
- Tikveš rosé — Good all-rounder for fish and salads.
Avoid heavy reds (Vranec) with fish — they're better suited to the lamb and grilled meat restaurants in the Old Town.
