North Macedonia's most rewarding destinations sit in the mountains. While the main motorways are smooth and modern, the roads to Galicica, Mavrovo, Popova Šapka, and the rural monasteries involve sustained climbs, tight hairpin bends, and occasionally rough surfaces. An SUV with all-wheel drive handles these conditions with noticeably more confidence than a standard saloon.
At Relax Rent a Car, our SUV option is the Dacia Duster 4x4 Diesel — a purpose-built, award-winning compact SUV with genuine 4WD capability.
Dacia Duster 4x4 — €100/day
The Dacia Duster is one of Europe's best-selling SUVs for good reason: it combines real off-road capability with everyday drivability, low fuel consumption, and a price point well below competitors like the Toyota RAV4 or VW Tiguan.
Key specifications:
- Drive system: 4WD (selectable 2WD/4WD/Lock modes)
- Engine: 1.5 dCi Diesel (115 hp)
- Transmission: Manual 6-speed
- Fuel economy: Approximately 5.5 L/100 km on highway
- Seats: 5 passengers
- Boot space: 445 litres (one of the largest in its class)
- Ground clearance: 210 mm (considerably higher than standard cars)
- Daily rate: €100
4WD Modes Explained
The Duster's drive selector offers three settings:
- 2WD (front-wheel drive): For motorways and dry tarmac. Maximises fuel economy.
- Auto (AWD): Automatically sends power to the rear wheels when the front wheels lose traction. The default choice for mountain roads and wet conditions.
- Lock (4WD locked): Forces equal power to all four wheels. Use on snow, mud, gravel, or steep loose-surface inclines. Speed-limited to 80 km/h in this mode.
For most driving in North Macedonia, Auto mode is the recommended setting. Switch to Lock only when conditions genuinely require it — heavy snow, unpaved mountain tracks, or steep muddy sections.
When Do You Need a 4x4 in North Macedonia?
Mountain Roads (Year-Round)
The mountain passes between North Macedonia's key destinations involve gradients of 8–12%. Routes to Galicica National Park, Popova Šapka, Mavrovo National Park, and Kruševo are all paved, but the steep grades and occasional rough patches make the Duster's higher ground clearance and AWD grip genuinely useful.
Winter Driving (November–March)
North Macedonia requires winter tyres from 15 November to 15 March. Mountain roads — particularly to ski resorts — can be icy or snow-covered. The Duster's 4WD Lock mode provides significantly better traction than a front-wheel-drive economy car on these surfaces. See our winter driving guide for tyre regulations and road conditions.
Rural and Unpaved Roads
Some of North Macedonia's most rewarding destinations are reached via unpaved or semi-paved roads:
- Monastery access roads — several monasteries sit at the end of 2–5 km gravel tracks
- Prespa lake shore — the southern shore road near the Greek border is partially unpaved
- Pelister National Park — some trailhead access roads are rough
- Tikveš wine region — smaller wineries along unpaved vineyard roads
The Duster handles all of these comfortably. Its 210 mm ground clearance means you will not scrape the underside on rocks or ruts that would damage a standard car.
Cross-Border Travel
The Duster is cleared for cross-border travel with our Green Card insurance add-on. Popular cross-border trips where 4WD is advantageous:
- Kosovo (Pristina): The main A2 highway is excellent, but secondary roads in rural Kosovo are variable quality.
- Albania (Tirana via Ohrid): The Ohrid–Pogradec road enters Albania via a mountain pass. AWD adds confidence.
- Greece (Thessaloniki): The A1 motorway is modern and smooth — 4WD is not necessary, but the Duster's diesel economy makes the 350 km round trip fuel-efficient.

Do you need a 4x4? For summer trips staying on main roads (Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola), an economy or compact car is perfectly adequate. The Duster earns its premium when your itinerary includes mountain passes, winter conditions, or destinations off the main road network.
Best Routes for the Dacia Duster
1. Skopje → Mavrovo → Galicica → Ohrid (3 Days)
This loop crosses two mountain ranges and visits two national parks. The Duster's diesel range (approximately 800 km per tank) means you can complete the entire loop without worrying about remote fuel stops.
- Day 1: Skopje to Mavrovo via Tetovo (150 km, 2.5 hours)
- Day 2: Mavrovo to Ohrid (130 km, 2.5 hours) with Galicica crossing
- Day 3: Ohrid to Skopje via Kičevo (170 km, 2.5 hours)
2. Skopje → Pelister → Bitola → Stobi (2 Days)
A southern circuit through less-visited territory. Pelister National Park's mountain roads are where the Duster's 4WD truly shines.
- Day 1: Skopje to Bitola via A1 (170 km), afternoon at Heraclea Lyncestis and Pelister
- Day 2: Bitola to Skopje via Stobi and Tikveš wine region (250 km)
3. Winter Ski Trip: Skopje → Popova Šapka (1 Day)
The 80 km drive to Popova Šapka climbs from 240 m to 1,780 m. In winter, the final 15 km can be snow-covered. The Duster with winter tyres and 4WD Lock mode handles this reliably.
Practical Information
Booking the Duster
The Dacia Duster 4x4 is our only AWD vehicle and books out quickly, especially in winter (December–March) and peak summer (July–August). Book at least 4–6 weeks in advance for guaranteed availability.
Online booking applies the automatic 10% discount, reducing the effective daily rate to €90.
Insurance Options
| Insurance | Daily rate | Excess |
|---|---|---|
| CDW (standard) | €7/day | €200 |
| Full insurance | €15/day | €0 |
For mountain and off-road driving, we strongly recommend full insurance (zero excess) at €15/day. Mountain roads increase the risk of stone chips, tyre damage, and minor body contact. With zero excess, you drive with complete peace of mind.
Fuel Costs
The Duster's 1.5 dCi diesel engine averages 5.5 L/100 km in mixed driving. Diesel in North Macedonia costs approximately €1.30/litre. A typical 7-day rental covering 1,500 km costs approximately €107 in fuel — significantly less than the petrol equivalents.
Documents Required
Same as all our vehicles: valid driving licence (EU accepted; non-EU requires IDP), passport or national ID, minimum age 18 with 1 year experience. No credit card deposit required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 4x4 necessary for driving in North Macedonia? Not for most itineraries. The main roads (A1, A2, A3) and city roads are well-maintained. 4x4 becomes valuable for mountain passes (Galicica, Popova Šapka, Pelister), winter conditions, and unpaved rural roads. If your trip stays on main routes in summer, an economy car is sufficient.
Can I take the Dacia Duster off-road? The Duster is designed for light off-road use — gravel tracks, forest roads, muddy paths. It is not a hardcore off-roader like a Land Rover Defender. Do not attempt deep river crossings, boulder fields, or extreme trails. For the unpaved roads you will encounter in North Macedonia, the Duster is more than capable.
What is the fuel range of the Dacia Duster? With a 50-litre diesel tank and average consumption of 5.5 L/100 km, the Duster has a range of approximately 800–900 km per tank. This is enough to drive from Skopje to Ohrid and back twice without refuelling.
Is the Duster comfortable for long highway drives? Yes. Despite being an SUV, the Duster rides quietly on motorways. The diesel engine cruises comfortably at 120–130 km/h with low RPM and noise levels. The elevated driving position gives a commanding view of traffic and scenery.
