Prizren is the cultural and historical capital of Kosovo — an Ottoman city of stone bridges, painted mosques, and a hilltop fortress that overlooks the Bistrica river. Most Skopje visitors fly past it on the way to Pristina, but Prizren is the more rewarding day-trip target: closer (1.5 hours), smaller (walkable in half a day), and densely packed with the kind of cobblestone-lane scenery that makes the Balkans memorable.
This guide covers the full route, border crossing options, what to see, where to park, and how to time the visit so you're back in Skopje by evening.
Distance and Drive Time
Skopje to Prizren: approximately 110–115 km depending on route Drive time: 1.5 hours via Blace; 1.75 hours via Hani i Elezit Border: 1 (Macedonia–Kosovo)
Prizren sits in southern Kosovo, just 18 km from the Albanian border and roughly the same distance north of the Macedonian frontier. From Skopje city centre, the drive is short enough that you can leave at 8:30 AM and be in Prizren's old town by 10:30.
Choosing the Border Crossing
There are two practical Macedonia–Kosovo crossings for this trip:
Blace (Блаце / Hani i Elezit area)
This is the main and most-used crossing. From Skopje, take the M-1 motorway north towards Kachanik, then the signed exit to Blace. Border procedures usually take 10–20 minutes. Once in Kosovo, the road continues as the R-6 to Prizren via Suva Reka and Recane.
Glloboçicë / Jazhinca
A quieter crossing further west, useful if you're staying in Tetovo or coming from the Mavrovo area. The road is twisty mountain driving but scenic — adds about 30 minutes overall.
For a Skopje day trip, use Blace. It's straightforward and well signposted.
Documents and Insurance
Your rental car needs Green Card Zone 1 coverage to cross into Kosovo legally. This is a one-off €50 supplement that also covers Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria. Without it, you can be turned back at the border or fined.
You'll also need an authorization letter from Relax Rent a Car confirming the car is permitted to leave North Macedonia. We provide this with every cross-border booking — just request Kosovo on your reservation. See the Kosovo car rental guide for full requirements.
At the border, have ready:
- Passport (no Schengen visa needed for Kosovo if you're EU/UK/US/Canada/Australia)
- Driving licence (EU licences accepted; non-EU drivers should carry an International Driving Permit)
- Vehicle registration document
- Green Card insurance certificate
- Authorization letter from Relax Rent a Car
What to See in Prizren
Prizren's old town is compact — you can cover everything on foot in 4–5 hours.
Sinan Pasha Mosque (1615)
The most iconic Ottoman building in Kosovo. The interior is decorated with floral frescoes and Arabic calligraphy, recently restored after damage in the 1999 conflict. Free entry, modest dress required.
Stone Bridge
The 16th-century Ottoman stone bridge spans the Bistrica river right in the centre of the old town. It's the most photographed spot in Prizren — at sunset, the warm sandstone of the bridge and the surrounding houses glows.
Prizren Fortress (Kalaja)
A 30-minute uphill walk from the old town, the medieval fortress offers the panoramic city view. The climb is steep but the path is well-maintained. Free entry. Best at golden hour.
Shadervan Square
The heart of Prizren's old bazaar — cafés, restaurants, and a fountain dating to Ottoman times. This is where you'll have lunch.
League of Prizren Museum
Covers the 1878 Albanian nationalist movement that organized here. Small but well-curated. €1 entry.
Holy Archangels Monastery
A 14th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery 4 km out of town along a beautiful river road. Walking distance for the energetic; better with the rental car. The site was destroyed and rebuilt; the surroundings are tranquil.
Where to Park
Don't drive into Prizren's old town — the streets are pedestrianized cobblestones and you'll be stuck. Park at one of the paid lots on the river road (about €1–2 for the day) or at the municipal parking near the bus station, then walk in. Everything is within 10–15 minutes on foot.
Where to Eat
Prizren's food scene is excellent and inexpensive. Local Albanian and Ottoman cuisine dominates.
- Marashi — traditional Albanian grilled meats and tavë kosi (yogurt-baked lamb). Old town location, riverside terrace.
- Te Syla — bureks and Ottoman pastries, perfect for breakfast or a quick lunch.
- Restaurant Fortessa — at the base of the fortress climb, lamb and grilled fish with the best old-town view.
Lunch for two with drinks rarely exceeds €25. See the Kosovo food guide for an overview of the country's cuisine.
Timing the Day
A relaxed day trip from Skopje works on this schedule:
- 08:30 — Leave Skopje
- 09:30 — Cross Blace border
- 10:30 — Arrive Prizren, park, walk to old town
- 10:45 — Sinan Pasha Mosque, Stone Bridge, Shadervan Square
- 12:30 — Lunch at Shadervan
- 14:00 — Climb to Prizren Fortress (1 hour up + view + 30 min down)
- 16:00 — Coffee and pastries at Te Syla
- 17:00 — Drive back
- 18:30 — Arrive Skopje
If you want to stretch the trip, add the Holy Archangels Monastery (45 min total) or drive 18 km further to the Albanian border for a glimpse of the Korab mountains.
Combining Prizren with Other Stops
If you have two days, Prizren combines naturally with:
- Pristina — Kosovo's capital, 80 km north (1 hour). See the Kosovo day trip guide for a Pristina-only itinerary.
- Skopje to Tirana via Prizren — 5.5-hour drive total. See the Skopje to Tirana driving guide.
- Mavrovo National Park — on the route back via Tetovo, adds 1.5 hours but the Bigorski Monastery and Lake Mavrovo are worth it. See Mavrovo National Park road trip.
Currency and Practicalities
Kosovo uses the euro (EUR) as its official currency — the same as North Macedonia is gradually adopting at tourist prices. ATMs are everywhere in Prizren. Cash payments are common in the old bazaar; cards work at most restaurants.
Mobile data: your North Macedonian SIM will roam to Kosovo with EU-tier rates if you're on a roaming-friendly plan. See SIM card and internet in North Macedonia for prepaid options that include Kosovo coverage.
Petrol: fuel in Kosovo is roughly €0.05–0.10 per litre cheaper than Macedonia at the time of writing. Refuel before crossing back if convenient.
