Brezovica Ski Resort from Skopje: Complete 2026 Winter Guide

Brezovica is Kosovo's main ski resort, sitting at 1,720 m on the slopes of the Sharr mountain range. From Skopje it's the closest cross-border ski destination — 70 km, 1.5 hours, one border. The resort has a colourful past (built in the 1980s, hosted the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics support events, suffered investment gaps after the war) but the lifts run, the snow is deep December–March, and prices are a fraction of the Alps.

For Skopje-based travellers it's a natural winter weekend. This guide covers the route, lift passes, equipment, accommodation, and what to actually expect on the mountain.

Distance and Drive Time

Skopje to Brezovica: approximately 70 km Drive time: 1.5 hours including border Border: 1 (Macedonia–Kosovo at Blace)

The drive from Skopje is short by Balkan standards. Final 8 km from Štrpce to Brezovica is a winding mountain road — in heavy snow, snow tyres or chains may be required.

The Route

  1. Skopje → Kachanik → Blace border — 30 km on M-1 motorway (~30 min)
  2. Blace border — 10–25 minutes
  3. Border → Štrpce → Brezovica — 40 km (~50 min). Final 8 km climbs from Štrpce village to the ski base at 1,720 m.

In peak ski-season weekends (especially Macedonian/Kosovo school holidays) the border can queue 30–60 min on Saturday mornings. Leaving Skopje by 07:00 puts you on the lifts before 10:00.

Insurance and Documents

Kosovo requires Green Card Zone 1 insurance — €50 per rental. Standard rental insurance does not extend across the border.

At the border:

  1. Passport
  2. Driving licence
  3. Vehicle registration document
  4. Green Card certificate
  5. Authorization letter from Relax Rent a Car

For more on cross-border driving see the Kosovo car rental guide and cross-border driving from North Macedonia.

Snow tyres: legally required in Kosovo from November 15 to March 15 in mountain regions. Confirm at booking — rental cars get fitted automatically in winter season.

The Mountain

Brezovica has approximately 10 lifts when fully operational (chair lifts, drag lifts, beginner platters). Total skiable terrain: about 160 hectares with 30 km of pistes in three difficulty bands.

Top elevation: 2,520 m Base elevation: 1,720 m Vertical drop: 800 m

Pistes

  • Beginners: Two short chairlifts at the base serve a wide green slope
  • Intermediate: Mid-mountain blue and red runs through the forest
  • Advanced: Two black runs from the top including the steep north face
  • Off-piste: Excellent powder runs in the trees after fresh snowfall (use a guide; avalanche risk in late season)

Lift status

Brezovica has had years of partial-lift operations as new investment slowly modernises the infrastructure. Always check the resort's social media (or call ahead) the day before driving — sometimes only the base lifts run, sometimes the full mountain.

Practical Notes

Currency: Kosovo uses the euro (EUR). ATMs at Štrpce village; resort base accepts cash and card.

Mobile data: Macedonian SIM roaming may work at EU rates depending on your tariff. If not, prepaid Kosovo SIM (Vala or IPKO) is €5–10 per week.

Snow conditions: Best mid-January to mid-March. December can be thin in low-snow years; April only the upper lifts work.

Apres-ski: Limited. Štrpce has 2–3 small bars; the resort base has a single mountain bar. This is a ski destination, not a party scene.

Combining with other Kosovo destinations: After skiing, drive 1.5 hours north to Pristina or 1 hour west to Prizren for a 3-day combined trip.
