Collecting a rental car at Skopje Airport (SKP) takes 10–15 minutes from the moment you meet our driver to pulling out of the parking area. But that assumes you know what to expect, where to go, and what paperwork to have ready. This guide walks through every step of the process — from landing to driving away.
Before You Land: What to Have Ready
When your flight touches down at SKP, have these in your hand luggage (not checked baggage):
- Driving licence — EU and UK licences accepted. Non-EU visitors should also carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. See the driving licence requirements guide if you're unsure.
- Passport — required for the rental agreement, even if you have an EU ID card.
- Booking confirmation — the email we sent when you confirmed your reservation. A screenshot on your phone is fine.
- Payment card — needed if you're adding any extras at pickup (insurance upgrade, child seat, GPS) or if a deposit hold applies. Visa and Mastercard accepted; American Express less reliably.
If you are collecting for a group and the main driver isn't travelling or is listed differently on the booking, contact us before arrival to resolve it — this is the one thing that can slow things down.
At the Airport: Step by Step
Step 1: Passport Control and Baggage Claim
SKP is a compact single-terminal airport. From landing to the arrivals hall typically takes 20–35 minutes under normal conditions:
- EU/Schengen passengers: Quick queue, often under 10 minutes
- Non-EU passengers: Border control queue varies — 10–30 minutes depending on flight volume
- Baggage claim: The single baggage hall has a clear carousel display
There is no need to rush. Our driver is already there waiting and monitors flight arrivals in real time. If your flight is delayed — even by several hours — we adjust automatically.
Step 2: Exit to Arrivals Hall
After collecting your luggage, proceed through the customs exit (the green "nothing to declare" channel for most tourists) into the main arrivals hall.
The arrivals hall at SKP is small. It is one open room. Our driver stands near the exit from baggage claim, holding a sign with your name. You will see the sign within a few seconds of walking through the exit. If you do not immediately see your name, walk to the centre of the hall — our driver may be positioned slightly to one side of the exit door.
Tip: Your name on the sign will match the lead driver name on your booking confirmation. If you booked under a company name or travel agent reference, let us know in advance so we can display the right name.
Step 3: Walk to the Vehicle (3–5 minutes)
From the arrivals hall, our driver leads you to the vehicle. The parking area for local car rental pickups is in the short-stay car park adjacent to the terminal — a 3 to 5 minute walk. The distance is short; if you have heavy luggage, our driver will help.
Do not follow signs for "Car Rental" inside the terminal — those direct to the counters of international chain operators. Local companies including Relax Rent a Car operate meet-and-greet: we come to you in arrivals, then walk you to the car.
Step 4: Vehicle Inspection
Before you sign anything, walk around the car together with our driver and inspect:
- Body panels: Look for any pre-existing scratches, dents, or paint chips. The driver will have a condition report noting any existing damage — compare what you see with what is recorded.
- Tyres: Check for visible damage or unusual wear (quick visual, 30 seconds).
- Interior: Confirm it is clean and the seat adjustment, mirrors, and controls work as expected.
- Fuel gauge: Should read full. Confirm the fuel policy: standard is full-to-full (return with the same level as collected).
- Spare tyre and toolkit: Located in the boot. Driver confirms location.
If you notice any damage not on the condition report, point it out immediately and ask for it to be added before signing. This protects you from any damage-related dispute at return.
Step 5: Rental Agreement
The rental agreement is a 1–2 page document covering:
- Driver details: Your name, licence number, nationality
- Vehicle details: Make, model, plate number
- Rental period: Pickup date/time and agreed return date/time
- Included items: Insurance type (standard third-party, CDW with €200 excess, or full zero-excess), mileage (should read "unlimited"), additional drivers if any
- Fuel policy: Full-to-full
- Emergency contact number: Our 24/7 support number
Read the key sections — particularly the insurance excess amount and the return time. Sign both copies; you keep one.
Step 6: Key Handover and Departure
You receive:
- Car keys (including spare key in some cases)
- Vehicle registration document (required at police checkpoints and border crossings)
- Insurance certificate / Green Card (if you booked cross-border coverage)
- Your copy of the rental agreement
The driver briefly shows you the fuel cap location and any vehicle-specific features worth noting (parking sensors, start/stop system, etc.).
Total time from meeting to driving away: 10–15 minutes.
What to Do If Something Goes Wrong at Pickup
The car isn't available: This is rare but can happen due to a previous rental running long. We will offer an equivalent or upgraded vehicle at no additional cost. If no alternative is immediately available, we will arrange delivery to your hotel within 1–2 hours.
You've lost your driving licence: Rentals cannot proceed without a valid licence — this is a legal requirement, not a policy choice. Contact your home country's licence issuing authority for an emergency replacement procedure if this happens.
Your name doesn't match: Minor discrepancies (middle name missing, hyphenated name) are usually fine. The passport is the primary identity document. Major discrepancies (completely different person) cannot be resolved at pickup — always book under the driver's exact name as it appears on their licence.
Flight cancelled or diverted: Contact us as soon as you know. We hold reservations for confirmed arrival times + 24 hours. For longer delays, call or email to rebook.
At the Wheel: First 5 Minutes
After collecting the car, before leaving the parking area:
- Adjust the seat and mirrors to your position — don't skip this, especially after the inspection where the driver may have sat in your seat
- Set up navigation — Google Maps offline for North Macedonia is recommended (download before arrival)
- Check the fuel gauge reads full — confirm before exit, not 10 km down the road
- Confirm lights are on — headlights are required at all times in North Macedonia, day and night
- Note the emergency number from the rental agreement — save it in your phone
Returning the Car
Return is the reverse of pickup: meet at the agreed location (SKP for most, or a city location if arranged), brief joint inspection, keys handed over.
Return at Skopje Airport: Drive to the short-stay car park, call the number on your agreement. Our driver meets you within 5–10 minutes. Inspection, paperwork, done.
Return time: The agreed time in your contract. If your flight is early morning and you want to return the car the night before, let us know at booking — overnight drop-off arrangements can be made.
Fuel: Return the car with the same fuel level as collected (full-to-full policy). There is a Makpetrol station 2 km from the airport terminal on the main access road — convenient for a final top-up before return.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my driver has a different nationality? The driver at pickup must be the person named on the booking. If you want to add additional drivers (for long-distance trips with shared driving), this can be done at pickup for €2/day per additional driver. Both drivers must be present with their licences.
Can I add insurance at pickup? Yes — you can upgrade from standard coverage to CDW (€200 excess, €7/day) or full insurance (zero excess, €15/day) when you collect the car. The driver will note the change on the agreement.
Is there a deposit hold? For bookings with CDW or full insurance, no deposit hold is required for online reservations. For standard third-party-only rentals, a hold may apply. Check your booking confirmation for the specific terms.
Can I extend my rental at SKP? Call us as soon as you know you need extra days. Extensions are subject to vehicle availability. We will quote the daily rate for the extension period (usually the same as your original booking rate or the published daily rate for that period).
