The most popular car rental request we receive after standard round-trip bookings is a one-way rental between Skopje and Ohrid. Whether you're flying into Skopje Airport and ending your trip at Ohrid, or arriving at Ohrid Airport and driving to Skopje for your return flight, a one-way rental removes the need to backtrack 170 km.
Here is everything you need to know about arranging a one-way rental with us.
The Skopje–Ohrid Route
Distance: 170 km by road Driving time: 2.5–3 hours (A2 highway via Tetovo and Gostivar) Road quality: Excellent on the A2 motorway section (Skopje–Gostivar), good paved road from Kičevo to Ohrid with mountain section Fuel cost (economy car): approximately €14 one way
The drive itself is one of North Macedonia's best — the A2 cuts through the Šar Mountains and the Mavrovo region before descending into the valley above Lake Ohrid. Many travellers make planned stops along the way to turn the transfer into part of the holiday.
Recommended Stops on the Skopje–Ohrid Drive
Tetovo (45 min from Skopje) — The Colourful Mosque (Šarena Džamija) is one of the Balkans' most striking examples of Ottoman architecture. Stop for 20 minutes and continue.
Mavrovo Lake Viewpoint (90 min from Skopje) — The artificial lake with its partially submerged church of St. Nicholas is a classic North Macedonia photograph. Short detour from the main road.
Duf Waterfall, Mavrovo (100 min from Skopje) — 30-minute walk through forest to a scenic waterfall. Best in spring and early summer.
Kičevo town — The last significant fuel stop before the mountain descent to Ohrid. Fill up here if below half a tank.
Ohrid descent viewpoint — The road drops dramatically toward the lake with views that stop most drivers in their tracks. Park safely and take it in.
One-Way Rental Arrangements
How It Works
We deliver the vehicle at your Skopje location (airport, city centre, or hotel) and collect it at your Ohrid location (hotel, Ohrid town centre, or the lakeside). The process is the same as a standard rental — we bring full rental documents, you inspect and sign, then drive.
One-way drop-off fee: Flat fee applicable, depending on the specific pickup and return points. Contact us when booking to confirm the exact fee for your arrangement.
Returning outside business hours: We can arrange a key-drop procedure if you are returning the vehicle late at night. This is commonly used by travellers with early morning flights.
Ohrid Airport (OHD) One-Way Option
Ohrid Airport (near Struga, 12 km from Ohrid town) operates seasonal flights, primarily in summer. If your itinerary begins or ends at Ohrid Airport, we offer:
- Pick up at Ohrid Airport → drive to Skopje for return flight: we collect the car at Skopje Airport or city centre
- Pick up at Skopje Airport → drive to Ohrid → return at Ohrid Airport: available in summer when OHD flights operate
See our Ohrid Airport car rental guide for full seasonal flight schedule and pickup arrangements at OHD.
Why Choose One-Way Over Round-Trip
The Backtracking Problem
Many travellers plan a trip like this: fly into Skopje → spend days in Skopje → drive to Ohrid → spend days at the lake → fly home from Ohrid. With a round-trip rental, this requires either returning to Skopje (adding 170 km and 3 hours) or flying both legs through Skopje. A one-way rental eliminates this entirely.
Common One-Way Itineraries
Classic North Macedonia Loop:
- Day 1–2: Skopje (arrive SKP, pick up car)
- Day 3: Drive to Ohrid via Mavrovo National Park
- Day 4–6: Ohrid, Lake Ohrid, St. Naum
- Day 7: Drop off car in Ohrid, fly from OHD (summer) or transfer back
Reverse Entry:
- Arrive OHD from international flight
- Pick up car at Ohrid Airport
- Day 1–3: Ohrid and surrounds
- Day 4: Drive to Skopje
- Day 5–6: Skopje
- Drop off at Skopje Airport (SKP) for departure
Extended Balkan Route:
- Pick up in Skopje
- Drive south via Bitola, Prespa Lake, Ohrid
- Continue to Albania (with Green Card) or return via lake road
- Drop off at Ohrid or at the Albanian border area
Pricing for One-Way Rentals
One-way rentals are priced as follows:
Vehicle rental rate (daily or weekly, same as standard): no premium on the vehicle rate itself.
Drop-off fee: a flat fee is applied to cover the vehicle repositioning from Ohrid back to Skopje. The fee depends on the distance between pickup and return points and whether a driver is required to reposition the vehicle. Contact us at the time of booking to confirm the exact fee — it is lower than what international chains typically charge.
Extras remain the same — GPS, child seat, insurance upgrades, and Green Card are priced the same as on round-trip rentals.
Tip: For stays of 7+ days, a weekly package rate applies even if you are doing a one-way rental. The weekly rate covers 7 days from pickup, regardless of drop-off location.
Practical Tips for One-Way Trips
1. Book the one-way arrangement explicitly When completing your booking, note the different return location in the comments or contact us before finalising. Do not assume the system will automatically apply a one-way fee — confirm it when we call to finalise your booking.
2. Fuel up before drop-off Our full-to-full fuel policy applies regardless of return location. Fill up at a station near your Ohrid drop-off point before returning the car. The Makpetrol on the main road into Ohrid works well for this.
3. Plan for the mountain section The Kičevo–Ohrid stretch climbs through a mountain pass before descending sharply to the lake. Allow extra time here compared to the motorway section. In winter, check road conditions before departure — the pass can have snow or ice even when Skopje and Ohrid are clear. See our winter driving guide for winter-specific tips.
4. Cross-border on a one-way rental If your one-way rental includes a cross-border detour — for example, Skopje → Kosovo → Ohrid — inform us when booking. Cross-border permissions need to be in the rental documents. Additional fees apply per our cross-border driving guide.
5. Document the vehicle at both ends Take photos of the vehicle at pickup in Skopje and again at drop-off in Ohrid. This protects both parties in the event of any dispute about pre-existing damage.
Skopje Airport to Ohrid: Step-by-Step
For most travellers, the one-way journey starts at Skopje Airport:
- Land at SKP — arrivals hall, collect luggage
- Meet our driver — we wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign, or meet at the designated parking area
- Vehicle handover — inspect together, sign rental agreement (10 minutes)
- Drive A1 south to Veles (40 min), then A2 west toward Tetovo
- Continue A2 through Tetovo–Gostivar — good motorway, speed limit 130 km/h
- Kičevo — optional fuel stop, then begin the mountain section
- Descent to Lake Ohrid — follow signs to Ohrid via Struga
- Arrive Ohrid (2.5–3 hours total depending on stops)
- Drop off — we confirm location, you return keys, complete paperwork
Comparing Alternatives to One-Way Rental
| Option | Cost (approx) | Flexibility |
|---|---|---|
| One-way car rental | €200–350 (7-day stay) + drop fee | Maximum |
| Return rental + taxi back | €200–350 + €80–120 taxi | Low |
| Bus Skopje–Ohrid | €8 one way | Minimal |
| Organised transfer (private) | €80–120 one way | None |
| Fly back (domestic) | Not available | — |
For any stay of 3+ days, the one-way rental wins on total value — especially for groups where the car cost is shared.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the one-way drop-off fee between Skopje and Ohrid? The one-way fee varies based on the exact pickup and return points and the dates. Contact us directly when enquiring — we keep fees transparent and lower than international chain equivalents. For reference, international chains typically charge €50–150 for inter-city one-way rentals in the region.
Can I return the car after hours in Ohrid? Yes — we can arrange a key-drop procedure for late returns. You inspect the vehicle on pickup, and we inspect on the next business morning. Confirm this arrangement at the time of booking so we can prepare the correct documentation.
Is one-way rental available from Ohrid to Skopje (reverse direction)? Yes. We can deliver at Ohrid Airport (OHD), Ohrid town centre, or your hotel, and you return the vehicle at Skopje Airport or city centre. The process and pricing are the same in either direction.
Do you offer one-way rental to other cities (Bitola, Gevgelija, Tetovo)? Yes, for most North Macedonian destinations. Contact us with your specific pickup and return locations for a quote. We also cover one-way rentals for cross-border trips to Kosovo, with advance booking and Green Card documentation.
Can I do a one-way international rental — pick up in Skopje, return in Thessaloniki? We do not currently offer international one-way drop-offs. The vehicle must be returned in North Macedonia. For trips that include Greece, Kosovo, or Albania, the vehicle returns to Skopje or Ohrid after the cross-border excursion.
