The Skopje Airport (SKP) car rental pickup is straightforward — the whole process from landing to driving out of the airport typically takes 30–45 minutes. This guide covers exactly what to expect at every step: where the meeting point is, what documents to have ready, how the handover works, and what to do if your flight is delayed.
Skopje Airport Layout
Skopje International Airport (SKP / Alexander the Great Airport) is small by international standards — a single terminal handling around 2 million passengers per year. The arrivals hall has:
- Two arrival doors from passport control
- A central waiting area with seating and a coffee shop
- Currency exchange and ATM
- A taxi stand outside the main exit
- Car rental meeting points just inside or just outside the arrivals doors (depending on operator)
Walking from the aircraft to the arrivals hall takes 5–10 minutes. With non-EU passport processing, allow 20 minutes from touchdown to arrivals exit; EU passport-holders typically clear in 10–12 minutes.
The Meeting Point
Relax Rent a Car operates a personal meet-and-greet service at Skopje Airport, not a rental counter inside the building. This means:
- An agent meets you at the arrivals exit holding a sign with your name (or your booking surname)
- The car is parked in the airport parking lot, 2–3 minutes' walk away
- The handover happens at the car, not at a desk
Where exactly to wait
Walk through arrivals → exit the doors into the public greeting area → look for a sign with your booking name. Our agents typically wait directly at the exit doors, on the right-hand side as you face out from the doors.
If you don't see your sign immediately, wait 1–2 minutes — the agent may be wrapping up another booking. If you wait more than 5 minutes, call our number printed on your booking confirmation; we have your flight on file and will know if there's been a change on our side.
Late flights and delays
We track your flight automatically by the number you provided at booking. A delay of up to 4 hours requires no action from you — the agent will be there when you land. For delays of more than 4 hours, the agent will WhatsApp you to coordinate.
If you don't have flight number on the booking, please add it via the contact form or email as soon as possible — we don't want a missed flight surprise.
What Documents to Have Ready
Have these in your hand or carry-on as you walk to the meeting point — not in checked baggage:
1. Passport
Required for everyone over 18. Non-EU citizens may also need to show a Schengen visa or proof of valid stay; the rental staff don't check immigration status (that's the airport's job), but the passport is required for the rental contract.
2. Driving Licence
Required for the primary driver and any additional drivers added at booking.
- EU/EEA licences are accepted as-is.
- UK licences (post-Brexit) are accepted as-is for tourism stays under 6 months.
- US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese licences are accepted with an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in your home country before travel.
- Other licences may require translation or IDP. See International Driving Permit Macedonia required for the full breakdown.
The licence must have been valid for at least 1 year at the time of pickup.
3. Booking Confirmation
The email or print-out of your booking. The agent has your booking on their system but a quick visual confirmation speeds up the handover.
4. Credit Card or Cash for Payment
Relax Rent a Car operates pay on arrival — you pay at pickup, not at booking. Both cash (EUR) and card (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted. There's no deposit hold on the card; the charge is just the rental amount and any selected extras.
For more on the no-deposit model, see zero deposit car rental Macedonia.
5. Cross-Border Details (If Applicable)
If you're driving across a border (Greece, Kosovo, Albania, etc.), the agent prepares the authorization letter in advance based on your booking. Confirm the destinations during the handover.
The Handover Process
Once we meet, the actual handover takes about 15–20 minutes:
Step 1: Walk to the car (3 minutes)
Through the airport parking, agent leads. Bring all your luggage.
Step 2: Visual inspection (5 minutes)
The agent walks you around the car identifying any pre-existing scuffs, scratches, or damage. Photograph anything visible with your phone — both for our records and yours. The inspection is recorded on the rental contract; if there's any doubt, take more photos than you think necessary.
This protects you against being charged for damage that pre-existed your rental.
Step 3: Operating the vehicle (3 minutes)
The agent shows you:
- How to start the car (if it's keyless or has a different ignition)
- The fuel cap and fuel type (petrol or diesel — important — never put the wrong fuel in)
- Lights, wipers, hazards, and any non-obvious controls
- Where the spare tyre, jack, and tools are located
- Bluetooth pairing if you want to use your phone for music or navigation
Step 4: Document signing (3 minutes)
You sign the rental agreement, the agent gives you:
- Vehicle registration document (original — keep in the car)
- Insurance certificate
- Authorization letter (with cross-border destinations if applicable)
- A copy of the rental contract
The agent keeps a signed copy.
Step 5: Payment (2 minutes)
Pay in cash or by card. You receive an itemised receipt.
Step 6: Drive away
The agent walks you to the airport exit and points you towards the city or your destination. Total time from arrivals exit to driving away: 20–30 minutes for a typical handover.
If You're Driving into Skopje
The airport is 23 km southeast of central Skopje, connected by the M-1 motorway and the M-2 ring road. Drive time: 20 minutes in light traffic; up to 35 minutes during morning peak.
Petrol stations near the airport: there's a Lukoil at the M-1 motorway junction, 2 km after leaving the airport. Useful if your fuel is anything below full and you need to top up early.
For more on the airport drive, see Skopje Airport car rental guide and the skopje airport car rental vs taxi comparison.
Pickup at Different Times
Daytime (06:00–22:00)
Standard pickup. Agent at the meeting point, immediate handover.
Late Night / Early Morning (22:00–06:00)
We do meet flights outside business hours — please confirm by adding the flight number at booking. There may be a small late-arrival surcharge.
Holidays
Christmas Day and Macedonian Orthodox Easter Sunday are the only days the airport service is not standard. We can arrange but please coordinate by email a few days ahead.
After-Hours Drop-Off
If your departure flight leaves outside business hours, we accommodate after-hours drop-off:
- Park the car in the airport parking
- Drop the keys in the secure key-drop box at our airport meeting point
- A photo of the car at drop-off (timestamp + location) protects everyone's records
The car is collected within a few hours and the rental closes out automatically.
What Could Go Wrong (and How to Handle It)
"I don't see my agent"
Wait 5 minutes (they may be finishing another booking). After 5 minutes, call our 24/7 line. Don't leave the airport until contact is established.
"My flight is delayed by 8 hours"
We track flights automatically; the agent will be there when you land. We'll WhatsApp you proactively if there's any complication on our side.
"My licence has expired during the trip"
Pickup-time validity is what matters. If your licence will expire mid-rental, contact us beforehand — we can usually accommodate, but sometimes need a renewed document or a co-driver added.
"I can't find the documents the agent gave me"
Call us — we have copies and can resend by email.
