When you book a car with Relax Rent a Car in North Macedonia, the headline daily rate is everything you need to drive the car legally and safely. Several services are included by default at no extra cost; a small number of extras are optional and added only when relevant. This guide spells out exactly what's in the price and what isn't, so there are no surprises at pickup.
What's Included Automatically
The following are part of every rental at no additional cost:
Unlimited Mileage
There is no per-kilometre charge on standard rentals. Drive 100 km or 1,000 km in a day — the rate is the same. This matters in North Macedonia, where the natural use-case is multi-day road trips reaching every corner of the country plus neighbouring countries.
Third-Party Liability Insurance (TPL)
Mandatory by law and fully included. Covers damage you cause to other vehicles, property, and personal injury to third parties up to the legal Macedonian minimum (which is generous compared to many European jurisdictions).
This is not the same as collision damage waiver — TPL doesn't cover damage to your rental vehicle itself. That's where CDW comes in (see below).
Vehicle Registration and Road Tax
The car comes with current registration, valid road-tax stickers, and a vignette where applicable. You don't separately buy any of this when renting.
Standard Roadside Assistance
24/7 roadside assistance throughout North Macedonia. If the car breaks down — flat tyre, mechanical failure, dead battery — call our support line and we dispatch a recovery vehicle. No call-out fee for genuine mechanical issues. See car breakdown emergency in North Macedonia for the procedure.
VAT (18%)
Already included in the displayed rate. No separate tax line at checkout. The price you see is the price you pay.
Vehicle Preparation
The car is delivered clean inside and out, with the fuel tank as agreed (typically full), and with all standard equipment (jack, spare tyre, warning triangle, hi-vis vest, first-aid kit) checked and present.
Documents
You receive at pickup:
- Vehicle registration document (original)
- Insurance certificate
- Authorization letter to drive the car (and to cross any borders you've selected)
Always carry these in the vehicle.
Customer Support
Phone, WhatsApp, and email support during business hours; emergency line 24/7.
What's Optional (Pay Only If You Want)
The following are not included in the base rate and are only added if you tick them on the booking form. You can add or remove most extras at any time before pickup.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) — €7/day
Reduces your financial liability for damage to the rental vehicle. Without CDW you're liable for the full repair cost of damage caused to the rental car. With CDW, your liability is capped at a €200 excess — meaning the maximum you'd pay for any damage incident is €200, regardless of repair cost.
CDW is recommended for almost every renter. The €7/day cost is offset by the first damage incident you're protected from.
Full Insurance (Zero Excess) — €15/day
Replaces CDW. Reduces the excess to €0 — you pay nothing if there's damage to the vehicle. Includes everything CDW covers plus:
- Tyre damage
- Windshield damage (subject to standard exclusions)
- Lock-out service if you lose keys
- Theft cover
Recommended for cross-border trips, mountain driving, and city rentals where parking damage is statistically common.
Cross-Border Insurance (Green Card)
Required if you cross any North Macedonian border:
- Zone 1 (€50 per rental): Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Kosovo
- Zone 2 (€70 per rental): Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Croatia (also includes Zone 1 countries)
This is sold per rental, not per day — one €50 supplement covers the whole rental period for unlimited Zone 1 crossings. See cross-border driving guide.
Child Seat — €2/day
Available in three configurations:
- Group 0+ (rear-facing infant seat, 0–9 months)
- Group 1 (forward-facing, 9 months–4 years)
- Group 2/3 booster (4–10 years)
Charged €2/day per seat. Macedonian law requires children under 12 to use age-appropriate restraints.
Booster Seat — €2/day
Same as Group 2/3 above, simpler and lighter than a full child seat. Best for short-distance daily use with older children.
Additional Driver — €2/day
Each additional driver beyond the primary licensee. Adding a co-driver requires their licence at pickup but is worth it for long road trips — sharing the wheel reduces fatigue.
GPS Navigation — €3/day
A standalone GPS unit pre-loaded with North Macedonia and neighbouring countries. Most renters use their phone (Google Maps works perfectly across the region with offline maps downloaded), but the GPS unit is available if preferred.
Wi-Fi Hotspot — €3/day
A pocket Wi-Fi router with a Macedonian SIM, useful if your home roaming plan doesn't cover the country or you want to avoid roaming charges. See SIM card and internet in North Macedonia for the alternative SIM-card approach.
One-Way Fee
If you pick up at one location and drop off at another (e.g., Skopje Airport → Ohrid Airport), a one-way fee applies. Standard intra-Macedonia one-ways are €25 for the drop-off leg. See one-way Skopje to Ohrid car rental.
What's NOT Included
Fuel
The car comes with the fuel level we specify (typically full) and must be returned at the same level. Refuelling is your responsibility — most renters refuel within 5 km of the drop-off location to keep this simple.
Tolls
You pay tolls as you encounter them. North Macedonia has electronic tolling (M-1, M-4, M-5) and manual booth payments on older sections. See toll roads in North Macedonia.
Traffic Fines and Parking Tickets
Any fines incurred during your rental are your responsibility. We are not the recipient of speeding tickets, parking violations, or congestion charges. If a fine is mailed to us, we forward it to you with a small administrative fee.
Personal Items
We are not responsible for personal items left in or stolen from the vehicle. Always lock the car and don't leave valuables visible.
A Sample Booking — What You'd Actually Pay

Frequently Asked Questions
Is insurance included in my Skopje car rental? Third-party liability insurance is fully included by default — this covers damage you cause to others. Optional add-ons cover damage to the rental vehicle itself: CDW (€7/day) caps your liability at €200, and Full Insurance (€15/day) reduces it to €0. Both are charged per day, not per rental.
Is fuel included? No — fuel is the renter's responsibility. The car is delivered with a full tank and must be returned full. Petrol stations are abundant on every major road; expect to refuel within 5 km of the drop-off location.
Are tolls included? No — North Macedonia uses electronic and manual tolling on the M-1, M-4, and M-5 motorways. You pay as you go. Total round-trip tolls Skopje to Ohrid are roughly €5–7 each way.
Do I have unlimited mileage? Yes — there is no per-kilometre charge on any rental. Drive any distance during your rental period for the same daily rate.
Are child seats free? No — child seats are charged at €2 per day per seat. Macedonian law requires children under 12 to use age-appropriate restraints; renting a seat from us is significantly cheaper than buying one for a short trip.
