Skopje Airport Car Pickup: What to Expect

Pick up your rental car at Skopje Airport (SKP): arrivals hall, meeting point, documents needed, terminal layout, and tips from 25+ years of pickups.

Skopje Airport Car Pickup: What to Expect

Skopje International Airport (SKP) is the main gateway to North Macedonia. Whether you land from a budget airline or a connecting flight, collecting your rental car is one of the smoothest airport experiences in the Balkans — if you know what to expect. Here is an honest, detailed guide from a company that has done thousands of airport pickups since 2001.

The Airport: A Quick Overview

Skopje International Airport (SKP) sits 20 km southeast of the city centre. It is a pleasantly compact airport. There is a single terminal with a straightforward arrivals flow — no shuttle buses between terminals, no long underground walks, no confusing multi-level structures.

The whole journey from touching down to sitting in your rental car typically takes 30 to 45 minutes on a normal day. On busy summer mornings when multiple international flights land close together, allow an extra 15 minutes for passport control queues.

Before You Land

Having these items ready before the plane door opens saves time at the desk:

  • Valid driving licence — EU and UK licences are accepted without additional documentation. Travellers from outside the EU and UK should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. North Macedonia is not an EU member, so non-European licences alone may not be accepted at police checkpoints.
  • Booking confirmation — We send a confirmation email immediately after you complete your online booking. Save it to your phone or print it. The booking reference number is all we need.
  • Credit or debit card — Required for security deposit on pay-on-arrival bookings. The card must be in the driver's name. We accept Visa, Mastercard, and most major cards. Cash-only visitors should contact us in advance.
  • Passport or national ID card — Required to complete the rental agreement.

At the Airport: Step by Step

Step 1: Immigration and Baggage

After landing, you will pass through passport control. EU and Schengen passport holders typically clear in 5 minutes. Non-EU travellers may wait 10 to 20 minutes depending on flight volumes. The baggage hall is compact — most flights have bags on the belt within 15 minutes of landing.

Step 2: Exit the Arrivals Hall

After collecting your bags, walk through customs (usually green channel — nothing to declare for standard tourists) and exit through the glass doors into the arrivals hall. You will immediately see a row of car rental desks along the left wall.

Step 3: Find the Relax Rent a Car Desk

Look for the Relax Rent a Car signage. Our representative will be there with your name displayed if we have not already spotted you. We monitor every incoming flight in real time using live flight tracking — if your flight is delayed, we know before you land. There are no "your car has been given away" situations with us.

Step 4: Complete the Rental Agreement

The desk process takes about 10 minutes. We will:

  • Verify your documents and booking
  • Complete the rental agreement (one copy for you, one for us)
  • Collect the security deposit pre-authorisation on your card
  • Walk you through the vehicle condition report

Step 5: Vehicle Inspection and Handover

We walk to the vehicle together and inspect it under good lighting. Every scratch, dent, and mark is recorded on the condition report before you drive away. Take photos on your phone as additional evidence — this is standard practice and we encourage it. Once you are satisfied, sign the report and the car is yours.

Step 6: Drive Away

The airport sits on a straightforward access road that connects directly to the A1 motorway. Skopje city centre is 25 minutes away on a normal day. Lake Ohrid is approximately 2.5 hours southwest.

Returning the Car

When you return the vehicle at the end of your rental:

  • Follow signs for Departures on the airport access road. The rental return area is clearly signposted.
  • Our team will meet you at the return bay and inspect the vehicle together — this takes 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Fuel policy: Return the vehicle with the same fuel level as when you collected it. Most of our vehicles are handed over with a full tank. The Makpetrol station 2 km from the airport on the main approach road is the most convenient refuelling stop before return.
  • Deposit release: Security deposit pre-authorisations are released immediately upon return if there is no damage. Depending on your bank, the funds appear back in your account within 1 to 5 business days.

Insider Tips for a Smooth Experience

Book online rather than walking in. Online bookings qualify for a 10% discount that walk-in customers do not receive. Availability at the airport desk is not guaranteed during summer months.

Add your flight number when booking. This allows us to track your arrival automatically. If your flight is delayed by 3 hours, we will be there 3 hours later. No phone calls needed, no extra charges, no stress.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals are not a problem. We operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The last Wizz Air flight from London sometimes arrives after midnight — someone from our team will be there.

Download offline maps before you land. Google Maps offline maps for North Macedonia work well and cost nothing. Alternatively, buy a local SIM card at the airport kiosk for around €5 with 10 GB of data — this covers navigation for your entire trip.

Child seats require advance notice. We have child seats and booster seats available, but they must be reserved at the time of booking. Last-minute requests at the desk may not always be fulfilled during peak season.

Alternative Pickup and Delivery Locations

Skopje Airport is our primary pickup point, but we also offer:

  • Skopje City Centre — delivery to your hotel or any city address
  • Ohrid — seasonal vehicle delivery to Ohrid town centre or the lake area
  • Custom locations — contact us for special arrangements, we have delivered to some unusual places over the years

Frequently Asked Questions About SKP Pickup

What if my flight is very late? We track all flights automatically. No action is needed from you.

Can someone else collect the car on my behalf? No — the person named on the rental agreement must be present and must be the one driving. We cannot hand a vehicle to a third party.

Is there parking at the airport for drop-off? If you need someone to drop you at the airport and pick up a pre-booked car, short-term parking is available at the terminal for 60 to 90 minutes free of charge.

What currency do I need? Our desk accepts card payments for the rental. Keep some Macedonian Denar (MKD) cash for parking meters in cities. North Macedonia has no highway tolls — the road to Ohrid, Tetovo, or anywhere else in the country is completely free.
